According to a report published in the New York Times, Rutgers officials “knew about Mike Rice’s bad behavior well before seeing it on video last year.” The Times indicate officials may have kept the behavior quiet “so as not to tarnish the university’s image.” There was even a report by independent lawyers commissioned by the school that “chronicled complaints by Rutgers basketball players.” Th report came at a “sensitive time” for the university, which was in the process of joining the Big Ten Conference, among other things.

The word ‘abuse’ needs to be used carefully and with wisdom and discretion. This coach is an obnoxious jerk who treated his p;layers badly. But the language and tone of the articles is extremely dramatic and grim. If the same words are used for this coach as well as for cases of abuse of power, sexual abuse and other forms of criminal conduct we will have no words left and there will be a backlash – and that is the worst thing that can happen. I know it’s sort of not PC to ask about why the victim did not act or react, but is it the same for men as others. Victim Blaming is a big issue – but when does victim blaming stop and personal responsibility start?
