Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive. Written by Matt Nix (APB, “Burn Notice”), directed by Bryan Singer (the “X-Men” franchise”) and executive-produced by Nix, Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “The Wolverine”), Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past”), Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Daredevil,” “Marvel’s Jessica Jones”) and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s Daredevil,” “Marvel’s Jessica Jones”), the series stars Stephen Moyer (SHOTS FIRED), Amy Acker (“Person of Interest”), Sean Teale (“Reign”), Jamie Chung (GOTHAM), Coby Bell (“Burn Notice”), Emma Dumont (“Aquarius”), Blair Redford (“Satisfaction”), Natalie Alyn Lind (GOTHAM) and Percy Hynes White (“Night at the Museum 3”).
I’m loving the the idea of Steven Moyer (True Blood) as a D.A. who enforced Mutant Resistraion is on the lamb with Whedonverse staple Amy Acker (Angel) “Escape From Witch Mountain” style when they discover that their children are basically joining The New Mutants = underground community of mutants is a X-Men fangirls & boys dream come true!
The roll call so far is:
Sean Teale as Marcos Diaz / Eclipse: A rebellious mutant who can absorb and manipulate photons.
Jamie Chung as Clarice Fong / Blink: A younger version of the mutant with teleportation powers previously portrayed by Fan Bingbing in the film X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Emma Dumont as Lorna Dane / Polaris: A brave and loyal mutant who can control magnetism.
Blair Redford as John Proudstar / Thunderbird: A strong-willed mutant, leader of the underground community.
Natalie Alyn Lind as Lauren Strucker: One of the series’ central children, a “perfect” kid.
Percy Hynes White as Andy Strucker: One of the series’ central children, a sensitive loner who keeps to himself.
Stan Lee even reportedly makes a cameo appearance in the pilot!
So after viewing the trailer I’m left with more questions than answers.
Supposedly, Days Of Future Past fixed the timeline. If the FOX mutant shows LEGION & THE GIFTED share that timeline we saw at the end of X-Men Apocalypse, in the late 80’s Essex Corp. (led by Mutant Geneticist Mr.Sinister) stole samples and resurrected the Weapon X program developing weaponized children like Wolverines female clone X-23 Old Logan helped the surviving children escape right?
Is this enclave of young mutants those kids? Unlikely because this show seems to be set currently. The events of LOGAN are set in the future after a cataclysmic event that wipes out most mutants on earth (Mutant Plague? Terrigen release?) Then there’s sister show LEGION that features David Haller: The mutant son of Charles Xavier, Haller was diagnosed with schizophrenia at a young age and meets the “girl of his dreams” in a psychiatric hospital. The character possesses various powerful psychic abilities, including telepathy and telekinesis. That show though a mixture of 60’s ascetic and today, has an indeterminate chronology, partially due to the main characters “psychosis” it’s also unknown if he was one of Mr. Sinister’s weaponized Mutant produced from Xavier’s stolen DNA or when Charles had the time to Sire him? and with who? Moria McTaggert? The connections are wonky but I’m willing to forgive if THE GIFTED is as well done as LEGION.
In trailer these kids are aware of both the X-Men and The Brotherhood but speak in the past tense, “We don’t know if they exist anymore”. So is this an alternate reality or is this show a “near future” show closer to LOGAN’s time? Let’s not even get into Polaris who is Magneto’s daughter!
I’ll just have to wait for my first screener and I’ll have the skinny for you Geek Nation!
