Hasta Muerte, located in Fruitvale, is a worker-owned café collectively run by people of color, according to its website. A few weeks ago, a police officer entered the café to get a coffee but was instead asked to leave. The officer apparently complained, which ballooned the moment into a bigger story. As Hasta Muerte noted in an Instagram post: “We know in our experience working on campaigns against police brutality that we are not alone saying that police presence compromises our feeling of physical & emotional safety,” which is why the officer was asked to leave. That cop has since asked to meet with some of the shop’s workers, which doesn’t seem particularly likely to happen. Hasta Muerte’s Yelp page has been battered with anti-immigrant and pro-cop takes, sending its rating spiraling downwards to 1.5 stars (though Yelp says it’s actively trying to clean that up). Over the last day, “Coffee Shop + Oakland” has a 15 percent positive score on Social. The search term “Hasta Muerte” isn’t doing much better, with a 20 percent positive score on Twitter. –Alex Shultz
