The stereotype says men like sports and cars, and women like diamonds and flowers. You cannot go wrong if you buy a gift from one of these categories. What happens when you and/or significant other do not fit into the box society has created? Finding that “perfect” gift for her can be a challenge.
It’s important that you listen to each other. If you continually give gifts that fall flat, maybe you need to find an alternative to gifts. Try something different. Here are some ideas you may find helpful.
3 Alternatives to Gifts
1. Purchase a Big Ticket Item. Combine the money you would spend on each other’s gifts to buy a “big ticket” item for your home. This should be an item you will both use. Taking this approach gives you the satisfaction of giving a gift, while avoiding the feeling of wasting money.
2. Celebrate the milestones by taking a trip. This can be a mini-vacation or an evening out. The point is not the destination, but the time you spend together.
3. Schedule a family outing. A great way to celebrate birthdays or holidays is going on a family outing. Zoos, theme parks, and children’s museums make wonderful destinations, and they are usually close to home.
