Iceland earned adulation from observers around the world last week when it began requiring companies to prove that they pay men and women the same amount for equal work. Companies with 25 or more full-time employees must analyze their salary structures every three years and report to the government for certification now. Failure to do so, or to meet equal pay requirements, will result in fines. The move is being praised on Social, which gives Iceland’s equal pay efforts 75 percent positive sentiment. Of course, there are always skeptics. Some on Social feel that even this law won’t be enough to overcome the overwhelming might of the global patriarchy. And others fear even worse repercussions. In 2013, Jofridur Hanna Sigfusdottir reported her employer when she found out a male counterpart was earning more at the municipality office where she worked. According to The New York Times, the office lowered her colleague’s wages in response rather than raising hers. –Hugo Guzman
