I work with private clients in one of two ways. Either general fitness and yoga or I’ll train them for an event such as a triathlon, marathon, century ride, or the like. While I love keeping people generally fit over the long term, I get super excited about helping them reach their goals. There is nothing like helping someone accomplish something they didn’t think was possible.
I recently worked with a client who wanted to train for a triathlon. He had less than 2 months before the race and was barely able to swim 100 yards non-stop in the pool, let alone over a half mile in the ocean. We’ve since worked in the pool and the ocean. We worked on his running form and endurance, and I’ve got him set up with his cycling and nutrition plan. He feels totally confident that he will be able to complete the race and now he has the freedom to push hard if he wants or just make it to the finish line. Both outcomes are awesome!
There are three main categories to our overall wellness: Fitness, Nutrition, and Stress. With my corporate clients, I’ll either create a plan for a specific race and/or keep that general fitness going. One of the things I’ve been doing lately is fit tests or assessments. This is an intake or sorts, we create a baseline for where you are in your life and what can use some improvement. The fit test consists of push-ups, pull-ups, jumping jacks, etc. It’s very basic, but gives us a great starting place.
Before we even get to the fit test, I have clients fill out an online form that asks 10 questions. You’re welcome to fill it out, the link is here. Following are the main topics and how we create a plan for wellness.
Fitness
What is your overall level of fitness. Think exercise. I ask people to rate themselves on a scale of 1-10, 10 being ready to race in an Ironman and 1 is that you’re a couch potato. Once you figure out where you are, we look at what your challenges are and then go into what you know you can do to change. If fitness is your thing, this category can stay as it is in your life and we’ll look at the following two. If, however, you need a little help, we set some goals and create a program for you to follow. Then we check in with you weekly to make sure you’ve been staying on track and meeting or exceeding those goals.
Nutrition
Eating is one of the biggest problems of our society. There are too many unhealthy choices that are too easy to access. Everyone knows that we need to stop putting processed, fried, sugary crap into our body’s. Our digestive system is pretty miraculous when you think about everything it has to breakdown, but it cannot sustain processing all those chemicals for too long! We go about the nutrition assessment the same way as the fitness one. Find out how you rate yourself, what are your challenges, then what can we do to help execute positive change. It’s a simple program, but often times it’s the accountability that matters.
Stress
The number one killer in the US is heart disease. One of the main causes of heart disease is stress and it’s many manifestations. Sometimes you’ll notice you’re not sleeping well or you’re getting short with loved ones. You might be frustrated at your kids or colleagues, there are a million different ways that too much stress shows up in your life. Once we assess your current status, we work with you on yoga, breathing, meditation, and more. We provide basic solutions that are easy to implement and you begin to watch your stress levels decrease.
It’s not news to anyone that reducing stress, eating healthier, and working out will undoubtedly make you feel better, live longer, and be happier. The problem seems to be getting people to stay consistent with their own lives and commitment to healthy action.
