Last night we had another great Mental Health & Wellness call! We talked about Seasonal Affective Disorder, something that affects over 3 million Americans every fall and winter.
What is it and how do we avoid it?
At its core, it’s a depression brought on by the changes in seasons around us. This is different than the holiday blues as this will last until spring or early summer when the weather turns nicer and when the sun comes out.
We discussed how we felt time change and longer hours of darkness play into this as well as a lack of exercise that we as a nation tend to fall victim to during the fall and winter hours.
Where you live plays a big part in this as people in areas like Southern California and Florida, where there’s more year-round sun, tend to have fewer problems with Seasonal Affective Disorder than people in colder, darker parts of the country.
One of our callers had just purchased two sun lamps off Amazon in an attempt to get a little more sun in her life during the dark east coast winters. We’ll have to check back in with her in a few weeks to see if it’s working.
What can you do to avoid Seasonal Affective Disorder taking over you and your life? The first thing is to get out in the sun as much as possible. Taking in as much natural sunlight as possible is the best way to keep the depression at bay.
Exercise is also another great strategy for keeping this type of depression away or any type for that matter. Getting your heart pumping and your body moving are two of the best ways you can keep pumping your body full of good stuff and keeping you happy.
