hey kids nice to see you again
0:03
so today i’m going to show you how to
0:05
write a check and i’ve drawn it up here
0:08
on the whiteboard to kind of walk you
0:09
through it i realize you don’t probably
0:11
write checks very often but when you
0:13
need to
0:14
it’ll be helpful to know how to do it so
0:16
this is actually in my book on page 130
0:21
there it is right there but i’m just
0:22
going to walk you through the steps to
0:24
try to simplify it even more
0:26
uh but first i do have a dad joke for
0:28
you so
0:30
so what do they call a check
0:32
in australia
0:35
well of course it’s a check mate
0:38
ah so anyway let’s get started
0:42
okay so i’m just gonna walk you through
0:43
the basics of a check
0:45
uh just so you can understand and get
0:47
familiar with it and i’m gonna answer
0:49
your question on probably the the one
0:51
line that’s confusing in all this it’s
0:53
pretty simple but if you look at it as a
0:54
whole it can be a little overwhelming
0:56
start breaking it down into small pieces
0:58
it’s fairly fairly easy so um so i got
1:01
the check written in blue and then i uh
1:05
so that’s the stuff that’s already
1:06
pre-printed everything in black is stuff
1:08
you’ll have to fill out when you write a
1:10
check
1:10
okay so here’s your personal information
1:13
and then this is paid to the order of
1:15
who you’re making it up to the date
1:17
the box for the money the check number
1:21
uh and then this line here is the one i
1:23
think that’s confusing and then we get
1:24
down to here my bank
1:26
and then what’s it for and then you have
1:29
a routing number and an account number
1:31
and then you sign and then this is where
1:32
you sign it that’s your signature okay
1:34
so let’s just break it down by the stuff
1:35
that we actually have to enter
1:37
uh
1:38
okay so you want to put the date you
1:40
start off with a date it’s always good
1:42
to date things so you have a record
1:43
because it’s easy especially as you get
1:45
older you go oh when did i do that you
1:47
know and plus when you got a transaction
1:49
like this you always want to make sure
1:51
it’s dated
1:52
okay and then paint to the order of in
1:54
this case it’s bayview apartments okay
1:57
so i’m writing out who who am i writing
1:59
that check to
2:00
and here’s the dollar amount 650 53 okay
2:04
and here’s the part that i i’m pretty
2:06
sure is the part that’s confusing to
2:08
people if you’ve never written a check
2:10
what do you do here on this line and
2:11
what you do is you write out the dollar
2:14
amount okay not the cents but the dollar
2:17
amount so in this case we got 650
2:19
right 650 650 and 53 100s which is 53
2:26
cents another way of saying that and
2:27
then you just put a line out to the end
2:29
okay
2:30
um and you do that line the way i what i
2:32
was taught that you put that line out
2:33
just so people can’t add something to it
2:35
right so i always just draw a line from
2:37
it okay and then down here you have
2:40
what’s it for what’s the memo for okay
2:43
or what’s the check for it’s a way to
2:45
remember why you wrote that check you
2:47
know if you’re writing lots of checks
2:49
you’re probably not writing lots of
2:50
checks but if you’re in business you
2:51
might be um
2:53
but in any case it’s good to remember
2:55
why did i write that check to to that
2:57
particular person for a you know for
3:00
rent it’s probably pretty easy but
3:02
for something else you just want to
3:03
remember why you wrote that check and so
3:05
for this one it says monthly rent march
3:07
okay
3:08
and then uh and then you sign it and
3:10
that’s all there is to it just to
3:12
clarify on this down here what this what
3:14
these numbers are is this is a routing
3:16
number for your bank and it tells the
3:19
the when they go to cash it tells what
3:21
bank they’re gonna draw the money from
3:23
this what happens behind the scenes
3:24
nothing you need to worry about but it’s
3:27
a routing number from your bank and then
3:29
your account number so they know what
3:31
account to draw it from at that bank
3:33
okay so that’s what that is
3:35
and i think that’s all there is to it
3:37
hopefully this was helpful to you thanks
3:39
for watching and god bless you
