The deeply contentious decision was strongly rejected by the UN three weeks later in a 128-9 vote to condemn America’s unilateral move. But the Israeli government—emboldened by the support of arguably the most powerful country in the world—is seizing the moment anyway. The Likud, which makes up the largest political group in the Knesset, Israel’s legislative body, voted over the weekend to annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Although the vote is non-binding, it’s the first of its kind to publicly push for what Palestinians consider a land grab. Perhaps more important, it signals a symbolic change from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stated – if tepid – support for a two-state solution. Netanyahu was not present for the vote, but he is a member of the Likud Party, and it is not yet known if he will enforce the resolution. If he does, it will surely be yet another unpopular choice.
