Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. It helps us achieve a deep state of peace and calm. It can be done while doing your daily yoga practice, while you’re at work, or pretty much anytime, anywhere.
It is a simple exercise that one can do when they are in a situation where they start to feel anxious or panicky. By training our brain to stay in the moment and not start racing with thoughts, we can help keep anxiety and panic attacks at bay.
Meditation is basically a series of deep breaths while sitting still and quiet, and allowing the mind to go still. It takes some practice, so don’t be discouraged if you aren’t able to do it for very long in the beginning.
In the attached meditation audio file, I will walk you through a 5- minute meditation exercise. I have found that most people are hesitant to try it because they simply don’t know how to get started and actually do meditation.
In theory, the steps are quite easy:
1. sit or lay in a comfortable position you can hold for 5- minutes (or however long you’re planning to meditate)
2. inhale through the nose — exhale through the mouth
3. feel your inhalation fill your entire body, deep down into your belly, allowing your entire body to relax
4. on your inhalation, bring in all the good thoughts in your life
5. on the exhalation, allow yourself to release and let go of all that is not serving you
If you find your mind begins to wander, that’s totally ok. Just bring it back to your breath as soon as you realize it’s wandered.
There’s no “right or wrong” way to meditate. It’s all about allowing your body and mind to relax, and bring yourself into a state of calm.
Meditation is incredibly powerful for stressful situations that arise as well as in our every day practice.
“Research at other institutions has shown that meditation can significantly reduce anxiety in patients with generalized anxiety and depression disorders”. … Adding, “This showed that just a few minutes of mindfulness meditation can help reduce normal everyday anxiety.” — Psychology Today June 2013
Meditation does help manage anxiety, depression and pain, according to the 47 studies analyzed in JAMA Internal Medicine on Monday, … The focus of mindfulness meditation is to train the brain to stay in the moment.
Give meditation a try, your mind will thank you!
