i don’t necessarily believe that it was
0:02
bad for me to keep my sons away from
0:04
black barbers
0:19
all right so we are about to head to
0:22
pick up your rival
0:24
we’re going to take him
0:26
for the first time to a black barber
0:27
shop to get his haircut now usually i
0:29
cut his hair
0:31
but black kid black barbershop i think
0:34
he needs to understand the experience
0:35
and the true craftsmanship that happens
0:37
when a barber lays them hands on you you
0:40
know what i’m saying with the clippers
0:42
and the professional style all that so
0:43
we’re going to introduce him to tage
0:46
the homie tate is going to cut his hair
0:47
at the barber shop it’s going to be dope
0:50
so are you saying that you want a mohawk
0:51
right now
0:55
probably yeah
0:58
what’s different
0:59
in like your hair and like
1:01
you know one of your friend’s hair from
1:02
school
1:05
my hair is like this one
1:08
yeah it’s like it’s a little bit more
1:10
like coily right like
1:13
it’s um
1:15
it’s a different
1:17
texture of hair
1:19
so uh
1:21
because of that you can’t just go
1:23
anywhere
1:24
everyone doesn’t know how to cut hair
1:25
they may say they know how to cut your
1:26
hair but they don’t necessarily know how
1:28
to cut it
1:29
you know what i mean
1:34
you gotta you gotta you gotta be very
1:35
careful on like where you choose to go
1:38
so
1:41
when i was a kid i used to go to the
1:42
barber shop all the time because my you
1:45
know
1:46
no one cut my hair except for the barber
1:48
so anytime i want to get my hair cut i
1:49
had to
1:50
walk
1:51
to the barbershop
1:55
how much minutes was it
1:57
to walk there like ten it wasn’t long
2:00
you know my mom’s friend from high
2:02
school would cut my hair his name was
2:03
skinny poo
2:06
skinny poop yup
2:08
skinny poop um used to cut my hair
2:11
his brother well his name is really
2:14
jermaine but
2:16
everyone called him skinny poo
2:18
why
2:21
because he was skinny
2:23
oh before that though
2:25
my uncle would cut my hair sometimes
2:28
my uncle thomas my mom’s
2:30
brother you met him once before
2:38
and uh he would cut my hair
2:41
and i thought when i grow up i want to
2:42
cut my kid’s hair like my own cut my
2:44
hair
2:45
but eventually i’m not gonna be able to
2:46
cut your hair anymore because you don’t
2:47
want a certain style and this guy right
2:49
here about to take you to
2:51
he could do any style
2:53
yo so today we’re gonna take uh my son
2:55
for the first time to a black barbershop
2:57
i usually cut his hair um and he’s never
2:59
had his hair cut you know what i mean by
3:00
a professional so i want him to
3:02
understand the craftsmanship and what it
3:03
takes to have a real barber put their
3:06
hands on you with the you know what i’m
3:08
saying with the professionalism so we’re
3:09
gonna go ahead and check out my man
3:10
taige
3:11
come on with us welcome black
3:14
[Music]
3:27
before we hop into this beautiful
3:28
episode of my son getting his hair cut
3:30
by black barber i want to tell you that
3:32
my experience with a black barber is
3:35
so intricate to my childhood and a part
3:38
of my upbringing i don’t necessarily
3:40
believe that it was bad for me to keep
3:42
my sons away from black barbers but i
3:46
felt that i was sufficient because it’s
3:48
an experience that i always wanted to
3:49
have with my children
3:51
but when you think about the history
3:54
of black barbers it changes your
3:57
perspective completely because the black
4:00
barber is one of the most essential
4:02
services for black people and i didn’t
4:06
even know how deep the history was right
4:09
you know in my childhood and many of our
4:11
childhoods the black barbershop
4:13
experience is
4:15
it compares to nothing right it is the
4:17
place where we congregate it’s the place
4:19
where we communicate it is the place
4:21
where um you know we we figure out the
4:24
standards of who we are and uh it’s
4:26
basically the
4:28
it’s it’s it’s like the water cooler
4:30
talk type vibe for black people it’s a
4:33
safe haven because
4:35
nobody else is there but us right
4:38
and
4:39
i know that it was important for the
4:42
transformation
4:44
in the middle of the week at the end of
4:45
the week having this experience but you
4:47
can walk in one way and walk out
4:49
completely different and more confident
4:51
and just feeling like i can’t be touched
4:54
after this haircut you understand me
4:58
the history behind it is so
5:00
crazy
5:02
so did you know right and correct me if
5:04
i’m wrong i’m you know i read this
5:06
my history might be a little bit off but
5:09
you know leave definitely in the comment
5:10
sections any suggestions and articles
5:12
and stuff like that you guys have but
5:13
from what i understand uh
5:16
you know
5:17
people who were enslaved black people
5:19
who were enslaved
5:20
uh a part of our services to
5:23
the plantation owners um was uh you know
5:28
to be barbers right to trim their beards
5:31
to cut their hair to shave all that
5:34
stuff like that was a service that we
5:36
did
5:36
um against our will to
5:40
these enslavers right
5:42
and
5:43
somebody got smart and was like yo
5:46
there’s other people jimmy john down the
5:48
road and whatever his face is down the
5:50
street or whoever you know i’m saying
5:52
like they need haircuts too so yeah you
5:55
can come use my
5:57
my my slave and you can cut your hair
5:59
but it’s gonna cost this much right but
6:01
they didn’t pay the slave they took the
6:03
money
6:04
so this was something like a service
6:06
that was being lice it wasn’t even being
6:08
licensed out but was being used for
6:10
profit
6:12
so much so that when barber shops like
6:14
first you know started going like
6:17
black people
6:19
the only the only patrons of barber
6:21
shops were white people because they
6:23
didn’t want the clippers on black skin
6:26
so black barbers could only cut
6:30
white hair
6:33
like
6:34
they kept us from our own people that’s
6:36
insane so in order to get a haircut to
6:39
get fresh
6:40
we they had to do it like after hours
6:43
and you know they had to sneak and get
6:45
like cut black hair like that’s insane
6:48
this was like
6:49
out of survival so there’s a huge
6:51
industry barbershops huge
6:53
industry right for this service
6:56
and now
6:57
you look at the barber now and the
6:59
barber is a renaissance man of sorts
7:02
right he doesn’t just do one thing he
7:04
has multiple different businesses and um
7:07
he’s he’s a leader in the community uh
7:10
he’s someone that serves the community
7:12
uh i remember when tage uh the barber
7:15
who’s going to cut your eyes hair today
7:17
during the
7:18
the pandemic he was outside cutting kids
7:20
here in the neighborhood you know what i
7:22
mean because everything was closed so he
7:23
was cutting kids here in the
7:25
neighborhood like the barber is so
7:27
important to our community
7:31
and that experience is so essential to
7:34
black experience
7:36
i just want to honor that more
7:38
so if you don’t mind i would love to
7:40
share more of that experience on this
7:44
channel
7:45
but i want to know what has your
7:46
experience been with the black barber
7:48
with the black barbershop leave it in
7:50
the comment section below and now i’m
7:52
just going to go ahead
7:54
and let this bless you um and shout out
7:57
to the homies uh for sending us this
7:59
track uh jay ruckers thank you
8:02
tage thank you uriah
8:05
you’re welcome
8:06
welcome black
8:12
[Music]
8:14
right now we’re witnessing the beginning
8:16
of possibly a long relationship
8:19
this child is meeting his barber
8:25
i can see in the beginning uriah is very
8:27
skeptical he doesn’t know what the
8:29
outcome is he doesn’t know the process
8:32
and tags is just grooving he’s in his
8:35
bag
8:39
[Music]
8:42
one of the main things that you need
8:43
with your barber is trust
8:46
you’re sitting in his chair knowing that
8:49
when you step out of this chair you’re
8:51
going to become a different person
8:54
you’ll witness the transition in uriah
8:57
once he stands up out of the seat
9:00
his mood changes
9:01
his face brightens up
9:04
for me
9:05
it reminds me so much of baptism
9:09
but man can we speak to just the
9:11
craftsmanship of what tage is doing
9:14
[Music]
9:16
shout out to all the barbers out there
9:17
doing this every single day transforming
9:20
the lives of people everywhere
9:23
[Music]
9:29
[Applause]
9:31
[Music]
9:35
one of the very subtle things about the
9:37
barbershop is the waiting area
9:40
because usually it’s a group of men
9:42
watching somebody else get transformed
9:44
just waiting for what’s gonna happen to
9:46
them
9:49
i love the fact that uriah chose a
9:50
design in his head
9:52
it’s funny he put it in the back of his
9:53
head because he really can’t see it like
9:55
that
9:57
[Music]
10:11
i think taige was just showing off at
10:13
this point he pulled out all the stops
10:19
at this point is just flexing on us
10:23
[Music]
10:28
[Music]
10:42
[Music]
10:50
i’ll put a link in the description below
10:51
so if you’re ever in oceanside
10:53
california you can stop by take your
10:55
shot
10:57
[Music]
10:59
trust and believe with anybody in that
11:01
barber shop you will not be disappointed
11:05
[Music]
11:16
the grand finale is getting that touch
11:18
of alcohol that’s how you know you’re
11:19
finished and it’s like the last hurdle
11:21
you gotta hop
11:29
[Music]
11:31
but you see it right here on uriah’s
11:33
face he looks brighter more confident
11:36
like he got a weight off his shoulder
11:38
congratulations from dad
11:40
and you got to pay the man
11:42
so your riot gave him the money taze
11:44
gave him back
11:46
the tip and i said nah the tip is for
11:48
him ryan thought he was going to take
11:49
the money and pocket it back in his
11:50
pocket
11:52
wow
11:54
today was amazing
11:58
man you’re clean dog
12:01
how you feel
12:03
handsome
12:04
he was already handsome before that
12:06
let’s be honest
12:09
but uh right now
12:10
so what did you think okay real
12:12
experience what did you think about
12:15
getting your hair cut by professional
12:16
barber did you like it did you
12:19
rather me do it
12:21
what do you think
12:23
i liked it
12:27
and
12:29
yeah i didn’t feel good
12:32
you what
12:33
i felt good you felt good
12:36
you felt like you were getting taken
12:37
care of pretty good
12:40
did you um do you want to go back
12:44
probably
12:45
probably okay
12:52
[Music]
12:58
mmm
