Penne and Wolfgang Schwarz refuse to live in the belief of their son’s life being limited…They believe in miracles.
It’s the painful nightmare that every parent can wake up from only time Penne and Wolfgang Schwarz couldn’t. In November 2013 the couple received the devastating news that their beautiful son, Joshua, has an inoperable malignant brain tumor, caused by a rare genetic disorder. Like a prison guard handing down a sentence the doctors told Joshua’s parents that their son only had 4 months left to live and so they should make the most of their time left with him.
What would you do?
Whether it be a close friend or someone on the news, we hear of those who have received the news that they have an incurable disease simply crumble. Those enduring such pain are only too aware that the years that seem to stretch on forever have now been reduced to minutes as the clock slowly ticks. It’s perfectly natural, right?
I am not seeking to condemn anyone who receives such news and gives up hope. As a fragile human being myself I am confident that I would do the same, which is why I am in awe with the Schwarz family.
While heeding the doctors orders and creating as many magical moments with Joshua as they possibly can they are also seeking to raise $50,000 AUD in order to take their son from their home in Melbourne to Germany where there exists treatment that may be able to prolong Joshua’s life.
Before you get a dose of compassion fatigue and quit reading, stick with me, here is the most incredible part. Raising money to help a terminally ill child or indeed, human being, is nothing new. The energy that it takes to rally people around and raise such money is certainly a daunting task, but as I read this couples GoFundMe page the most profound sentence, written by Penne encapsulates the families deep rooted beliefs and this is what I find so powerful;
“We refuse to live in the belief of our son’s life being limited…We believe in miracles. The miracle we birthed known as Joshua, and the miracles yet to be revealed.”
The fact that we are alive, today on planet earth is a miracle, it’s a miracle that we should choose to remain in awe of every single day.
The same atoms and energy that combusted into space as a result of the “Big Bang” are the same atoms that are within you. Within each one of us is a source of energy just waiting to be unleashed. Some have chosen to tap into this energy and have brought this energy into being which is why we can send a man into the moon, which is why I can type on a laptop, which is why we can drive to work every single day. That same power exists within each and everyone of us.
When you hit a problem in life – relationships, finances, your career or anything else, what do you do? Do you hold your problem high above your head and accept your ultimate fate? Or, do you hold the miracle of your humanity way above your situation knowing that deep within you is the powerful ability to transform whatever situation you face?
Penne and Wolfgang are believing in a miracle for their son. They are believing for a miracle that is not some far flung dream that they are hopelessly clinging on to. This miracle is the truth that we experience every day, as babies are born all around the world. It is the miracle of life.
No matter what situation you face never dwell on your problem but focus on the miracle, the miracle that is you.
