Earth Day, which began as an environmentalist demonstration at colleges and universities across the U.S. in 1970, is now observed in 193 countries worldwide according to the Earth Day Network. Millions will be planting trees and picking up trash on Earth Day, but some major companies have decided to get creative. Apple announced on Thursday that every device turned in at its stores from now through Apr. 30 will trigger a donation to nonprofit Conservation International. Apple also unveiled Daisy, a new robot used to disassemble iPhones and recycle valuable materials. Porn site RedTube is taking another route, allowing users to track the length of their showers through its new app. Shorter showers could win you a free week of RedTube Premium. Of course, some companies are turning Earth Day into a commercial opportunity, with Amazon, Best Buy, and Ikea all holding sales events. Social media users don’t mind, though. Earth Day gets 91 percent positive sentiments online, commercialized or not. –Hugo Guzman
