On Tuesday, Senate Republicans announced their plan will include a repeal of the individual mandate that stipulates that almost all Americans must have health insurance or pay a penalty. While that requirement has never been particularly popular, it’s long been considered a necessity to make Obamacare work. If it were taken away, there would be less incentive for younger people to buy health insurance, which would drive up costs on the exchanges for older people whom insurance companies consider riskier to cover. Senate Republicans are ignoring that (and the fact that an estimated 13 million people would lose their healthcare coverage in a decade) and instead are pointing to a Congressional Budget Office’s finding that elimination of the individual mandate would save $338 billion over 10 years. Over the last three days, “Senate + Individual Mandate” has a 41 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
