To attract Success and achieve personal growth, bridging the gap between what we know we should do and what we do is essential. In our professional and personal lives, we often play three roles: player, coach, and team member. These roles are not mutually exclusive, and each can benefit from the characteristics of the others.
When it comes to the role of a “player,” which is an individual part of a team or organization, there are several qualities that contribute to Success:
⭐ Self-awareness
Being aware of our strengths and weaknesses is crucial. If we don’t clearly understand who we are and what we do, any knowledge or skills we acquire may not have a significant impact. Self-awareness involves honestly evaluating ourselves, acknowledging our shortcomings, and striving for improvement.
By knowing our areas of expertise, we can focus on developing our skills to become indispensable. However, it is important to avoid arrogance. The best way to prevent this is by actively listening to those around us who know us well. By paying attention to their praises and criticisms, we can identify areas for personal growth.
Self-awareness also means recognizing what aspects of our lives we have full control over, such as attitude and commitment, and letting go of things beyond our direct influence. For example, the basketball coach John Wood taught his players at UCLA how to wear socks correctly to prevent blisters. This seemingly insignificant detail helped the players stay fresh throughout the game, enabling them to perform better.
To enhance self-awareness, we can ask ourselves the following questions:
- What are our strengths?
- What areas need improvement?
- What is our plan for self-improvement?
By reflecting on these questions, we can better understand ourselves and work towards personal growth.
⭐ Passion
Passion is the driving force behind our actions, allowing us to distinguish our work from others. It shapes our attitude and approach to tasks, ultimately determining the sense of satisfaction we experience. When we infuse Passion into our work, we cultivate intrinsic motivation that keeps us going during challenging times and positions us to seize opportunities.
Passion can even arise from obstacles, as the desire to overcome them transforms them into valuable learning experiences. We truly learn and grow through discomfort, rather than staying within our comfort zones. Talent alone is rendered ineffective without the activation of Passion.
To cultivate a change in mindset, we can practice using phrases like “I have the pleasure/honor/the good fortune to…” instead of obligatory verbs like “I must.” This shift helps reinforce the joy and privilege we have in our work.
Exercise:
Reflect on three main obstacles you have encountered and explore how they can become sources of motivation.
⭐ Discipline
Discipline empowers us to establish and refine systems that lead to self-improvement. It involves developing habits and a structured approach that gives us an edge over others. Success is not a result of chance but is created through the consistent practice of habits that drive us toward our goals, striving for perfection.
Discipline encompasses three key elements:
- Deciding what you want to achieve.
- Determining the price you are willing to pay to achieve it.
- You are making a conscious choice whether you are ready to pay that price or not. It is not solely focusing on the result but embracing the process and concentrating on the necessary steps to reach the goal.
Exercise: Identify your three most important job responsibilities and assess whether you are spending at least 80–90% of your time on them. This evaluation will help determine your level of effectiveness.
⭐ Willingness to learn
Embracing the fact that learning is a lifelong journey is crucial. Knowledge is within our control, and we can continuously strive to enhance our expertise. To foster this growth, we must set aside our ego, approach learning with an open mind, and be receptive to feedback from others. Criticism can serve as a valuable teacher, and we need to train ourselves to recognize great ideas, accept failure as a learning opportunity, and appreciate the lessons that come from constructive criticism.
⭐ Self-esteem
Self-esteem attracts Success and results from self-awareness, Passion, and a commitment to personal growth. It acts as a beacon, highlighting our work and inspiring others. Demonstrating self-esteem does not entail arrogance but confidence in ourselves and our abilities. Self-esteem acts as a magnet, drawing in what we desire and enabling us to learn from the past without dwelling on it, ultimately propelling us forward.
Takeaway
✔️ Success is not a mere product of fate but rather a deliberate outcome that can be attracted, chosen, and even created.
The journey towards personal growth necessitates bridging the gap between our knowledge of what we should do and our actual actions. Our professional and personal lives require us to take on various roles, such as that of a player, a coach, and a team member. Interestingly, each of these roles can benefit from the unique characteristics inherent in the others.
✔️ As players in our own lives, cultivating self-awareness becomes paramount.
Understanding our strengths, weaknesses, values, and aspirations is a solid foundation for Success. Moreover, infusing Passion into our endeavors infuses them with purpose and fuels our drive to excel. Combining this Passion with Discipline establishes the necessary habits and routines that contribute to our growth and accomplishments. Embracing a lifelong learning mindset further propels us forward, as it enables us to adapt, evolve, and continuously improve. Finally, having unwavering confidence in ourselves and our abilities is a vital component of Success, as it enables us to overcome challenges and seize opportunities with conviction.
✔️ In the realm of coaching, we find ourselves in a position of guidance and support for others.
By sharing our knowledge, inspiring others, and providing constructive feedback, we contribute to their growth and development. Drawing from the qualities of a player, we can lead by example, demonstrating self-awareness, Passion, Discipline, a thirst for knowledge, and unwavering confidence. As coaches, we have the unique opportunity to empower others to reach their full potential, creating a ripple effect of Success.
✔️ As team members, we collaborate and cooperate with others toward a common goal.
In this role, we can leverage the qualities of both players and coaches. We can contribute to the team’s Success by cultivating self-awareness and understanding our strengths. Infusing Passion into our work creates a contagious enthusiasm that inspires and motivates our teammates. Discipline helps us maintain focus, meet deadlines, and fulfill our responsibilities. Embracing lifelong learning allows us to bring new ideas and perspectives to the team, fostering innovation and growth. And, of course, having confidence in ourselves and our teammates fosters trust, collaboration, and a sense of unity.
⭐⭐⭐ By adopting the characteristics of players, coaches, and team members, we can navigate our personal and professional lives with self-awareness, Passion, Discipline, a thirst for knowledge, and unwavering confidence. Doing Doingrid is between knowing what we should do and doing it, propelling ourselves towards personal growth, and achieving the Success we desire. ⭐⭐⭐
