I produce and host a weekly podcast/videocast called Real Men Feel. Last night we recorded an episode featuring men who proudly support President Donald Trump. My goal in doing this specific show was to better understand such men. I have a tough time imaging why anyone would still be supporting Trump. Most of my family, friends and prior show guests lean to the liberal slant regarding politics. As does my co-host, Appio Hunter.
I was surprised by the effort it took to find Trump fans willing to speak up and be seen. Everyone I knew and reached out to, passed. I got connected with our guests, Buddy and Tony, via a mutual friend. I had a video call with each of them to let them know what I was looking for and how the show would unfold.

These were brave guys who did not know me and had to take me at my word that this wasn’t an ambush or a setup. I invited them to come on Real Men Feel and have a conversation; to share their views and what they support, not to debate anything.
During the show, I found it surprisingly challenging just to listen. My automatic reaction was to counter, to argue and have a rebuttal. After a few minutes of effort to do so though, it was easy. I enjoyed listening. I found myself fascinated. I liked hearing the viewpoints of other men without any need to be defensive or refute anything they said.
They gave me the gift of holding space for opinions I don’t share, and I discovered that despite how things seem on social media; I don’t have to respond to everything I don’t agree with. I can keep it to myself and ask another question to increase my understanding of another man.

Both guests mentioned how difficult it is for them to share their support of President Trump without being called names. The ultimate goals of improving the country are the same across the political spectrum; the battles are over the paths and the details. What I learned this week is the fights aren’t a requirement. During the show, “Can’t we all just get along,” was said sarcastically at one point, but I found that yes, we can. Be open and listen. There is no need to make everyone you meet agree with you.
I invite you to listen for yourself here. Whether you do or don’t check out the show, I genuinely hope you listen to the people around you, especially the ones you don’t agree with.
Make an effort to bite your tongue long enough for them to feel heard. You both may discover that you have more in common than you ever paused to imagine.
We can bring back the lost art of conversation; it starts with listening.
