Fam,
If the midterm elections showed us anything clearly, it is that organizing in support of abortion access works, and the people are ready to defend our rights. From Michigan to California, from Kentucky to Vermont to Montana, voters rejected ballot measures that would further restrict abortion access and approved measures to establish state constitutional rights to abortion access — proving that our freedom comes from movements, not courts.
We know reproductive justice is central to Black liberation, and we know that any limit on abortion access disproportionately harms us. Now, we must keep up the drumbeat to end the criminalization that Black people are disproportionately facing for seeking the care we need.
As a Black liberation movement guided by Black feminist values and committed to abolition, we see the right’s quest to limit abortion access for what it is: another avenue for the state to criminalize and harm the most vulnerable among us.
Our Vision for Black Lives — a comprehensive framework for a society that values Black lives, repairs past harms, and invests in Black communities — calls for full access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care and the elimination of discriminatory barriers to health care for all people. We have always known that bodily autonomy is a crucial component of economic self-determination, and it feels more important than ever. In a political context that provides little to no support to parents in feeding, housing, or otherwise caring for their families, we must protect the tools we have to gain some control over the course of our lives.
Self-determination is a key pillar of Black power. We won’t permit another avenue for the state to criminalize and harm the most vulnerable among us.
It’s time to take action, get involved with and donate to your local abortion fund.
In solidarity,
Movement for Black Lives
