Tool Tuesday – Level
Transcript provided by YouTube:
0:00
hey kids it’s tool tuesday and i haven’t
0:03
done one of these for a while and so i
0:05
thought i’d just start going through
0:06
some
0:07
tools that i highly recommend that you
0:09
have in your toolbox uh so
0:12
um anyway we’ll walk through that here
0:15
shortly before i do that i do have a dad
0:17
joke for you so
0:18
um
0:19
i’m gonna level with you
0:21
never date a tennis player
0:24
love means nothing to them ah so
0:27
anyway uh you know i was once asked what
0:30
i thought was the most
0:32
underrated tool uh i i hate to speak in
0:36
absolutes so i it’s hard to name just
0:39
one that’s the most underrated but i
0:41
think
0:42
a level is so key uh and i’ll show you
0:45
why because there’s several things that
0:47
you need to have it around for you know
0:49
how a level works of course i think i
0:50
showed you this in my um
0:53
how to hang a shelf if you have things
0:55
level it’s so key but you see that
0:58
bubble you just want to make sure that’s
0:59
in the in the center there as close as
1:01
you can right to where it’s
1:04
in the center it’s a little harder to
1:05
hold this little tiny thing
1:08
as you get into these so i would
1:10
recommend you at least have one of these
1:11
they’re about
1:12
uh you know it’s gonna be under ten
1:14
dollars maybe five dollars and then it
1:16
has a usually has a magnet on the side
1:19
so that sticks to something if you’re
1:22
wanting to put it there and then you
1:24
have not only the one where you can set
1:26
it this way to make sure it’s level but
1:28
this way um and i’m just going to show
1:30
you a few practical things that you’ll
1:32
definitely want to have a level around
1:34
for
1:35
and then there’s actually even a
1:37
a laser level like this and
1:40
it has a level on the top there and then
1:42
it has a level
1:44
here oh you can’t see it from that side
1:46
and then it has a button on it and it
1:48
actually shines a
1:49
light you can’t see it when it’s out
1:51
here
1:52
since it’s so light out but uh and i can
1:55
show you that inside um to show you
1:58
because it actually makes
1:59
cross hairs to make sure that uh things
2:02
are level and you make sure that the
2:03
thing is level and once it’s level then
2:05
you know that it’s sending a a level
2:08
line on your wall for you and those come
2:10
in really handy so let me walk around
2:13
and show you a few things
2:14
a level is super handy for
2:17
all right so if you’re ever building a
2:20
fence
2:21
you of course start with your posts and
2:23
the posts have to be level
2:25
uh so you make sure that this way see
2:28
how it’s see that top one i don’t know
2:30
if you can see the reading there it
2:32
doesn’t have to be exact but you want to
2:34
go for exact and then you got a little
2:36
bit of wiggle room there right so and
2:38
then you want to make sure you don’t
2:39
have any anything on your level or on
2:42
here that would be changing it to where
2:44
it looks like it’s level when it’s
2:46
really not right so you have that and
2:49
when so when this post was set
2:52
uh you put it in the cement and then you
2:54
put braces in
2:56
on this side and on this side you got to
2:58
make sure it’s leveled this way as well
2:59
right so you put that put that there and
3:02
it’s level
3:03
okay
3:05
super critical if you’re building a
3:07
fence and you don’t have a level
3:09
you’re gonna be in trouble because
3:11
once you build these level then
3:13
everything else all comes together as
3:15
you’re setting your posts just make sure
3:17
that they’re they’re level and then you
3:18
put those braces in before the cement
3:21
hardens
3:22
so if you’re ever installing drainage
3:24
you know this is a piece left over from
3:26
when i did some drainage recently you
3:28
got the holes and you you may not know
3:30
this i don’t know i’m not going to get
3:31
into drainage but these holes are
3:33
actually supposed to face down not up uh
3:35
because then and you put it in rocks too
3:38
so then it’s face down and then the
3:40
rocks kind of catch it goes up the water
3:42
flows right you might think that they’d
3:44
go here so the water would come down
3:45
here but that is not the case but anyway
3:48
so
3:49
so let’s say you’re putting this in so
3:51
it’s here
3:53
let’s see yeah it’s there
3:54
you want to make sure
3:56
that it’s not level it’s actually
3:58
flowing the way you want it to go right
4:00
so you would use a level for that too
4:02
right you can see
4:03
that would be level
4:06
and then that would be where it’s
4:07
flowing so you don’t have to have a huge
4:10
grade necessarily on this but it needs
4:12
to
4:12
you know needs to be not level flowing
4:14
the way you want it to flow so that’s
4:16
important to have a level for that
4:18
if you’re going to hang a picture right
4:20
of course you would need a level and you
4:22
can tell i mean you might be able to
4:24
tell from your eyes but when you get
4:26
that level on there and it sure shows
4:27
you that that’s way out of whack right
4:29
so let’s rehang it
4:35
and now it’s in between
4:39
there you go
4:42
when you hang your whiteboard too
4:44
you know it’s perfectly level here
4:47
and so that’s
4:48
it’s critical because if this was wonky
4:51
your eyes would pick up on it so want to
4:53
make sure that’s level
4:55
right so these laser levels are pretty
4:57
cool you just got to make sure whatever
4:59
they’re sitting on
5:00
is level and then it’s going to throw
5:04
a beam across over there so it has a
5:06
level sitting here
5:09
okay oh i just turned it off okay so now
5:12
it’s on and you can see that it’s
5:14
casting a beam over there right
5:16
up and down
5:18
and then straight across too so these
5:20
are really handy uh
5:22
you know if you’re hanging something you
5:24
can set this thing up too
5:25
uh
5:26
yeah to keep a line kind of steady for
5:28
you if you’re putting up tile you could
5:30
use it for that too so um yeah these are
5:33
pretty
5:34
pretty handy i picked this one up at
5:35
harbor freight uh
5:37
i’m not getting compensated for that
5:39
so uh
5:40
and i think it was
5:42
under 30 dollars so it’s pretty handy
5:45
for for different things like that um
5:48
yeah
5:49
pretty fun to to play around with you
5:51
can see
5:52
let’s see i’ll move it so you can see it
5:55
and then like i said you just got to
5:56
make sure that what you’re setting it on
5:59
is level so that you get a level thing
6:01
there if this isn’t level then your
6:03
line’s going to be wonky right
6:07
all right so i hope that was helpful for
6:08
you you know um obviously you can see i
6:11
have a a four foot level here too um and
6:14
then i have a three two foot level so
6:17
two foot
6:18
and a four foot and they come in all
6:21
kinds of shapes and sizes but i would
6:22
recommend that you at least start with
6:24
this size because it’ll
6:26
come in really handy when you’re doing a
6:28
lot of different things
6:30
and it is probably a very underrated
6:32
tool because
6:33
you know if it’s not level
6:36
it’ll show and if you’re just working
6:37
with tape measure or what have you
6:38
trying to get it level
6:40
this just is an inexpensive way to to
6:43
make sure things are level so
6:45
all right so thanks for watching and god
6:47
bless you
