When you’re in love, do you have trouble expressing your feelings to the object of your desire? It’s not always easy to put feelings into words. And the last thing you want is for the wrong words to come spilling out of your mouth (or onto a Valentine’s Day Card to be mocked for evermore. Yikes!).
Throughout time, poets and writers, lovers and the love-challenged have attempted to express the love in their hearts. But it’s not always easy. Most of us are not gifted like William Shakespeare or e.e. cummings.
When you’re in a relationship, words like “I love you” can sound hollow, cliché, not quite right. So, if you’re struggling to express your love, have no fear—you can turn to one of these beautiful love quotes. There’s something for everyone here, whether you’re in the mood to be romantic, silly, profound, deep, or sweet and simple.
Chances are, someone has already expressed what you are thinking and feeling about love. Why work so hard to try and come up with something profound? Grab one of my favorite love quotes the next time you’re at a loss for words. Guaranteed to win you points with your love interest. (And I promise they won’t make you barf.)
Top Ten Love Quotes (That Won’t Make You Barf)
#1. One of my favorite love quotes. It has been attributed to Richard Gere and Liam Neeson, but I think this guy is the true author.
“Everyone says love hurts, but that is not true. Loneliness hurts. Rejection hurts. Losing someone hurts. Envy hurts. Everyone gets these things confused with love, but in reality love is the only thing in this world that covers up all pain and makes someone feel wonderful again. Love is the only thing in this world that does not hurt.”
― Meša Selimović
#2. For the hopeless romantic.
“That’s what it feels like when you touch me. Like millions of tiny universes being born and then dying in the space between your finger and my skin. Sometimes I forget.”
― Iain Thomas,
#3. Love me some Rumi: beautiful and poignant.
“I choose to love you in silence…
For in silence I find no rejection,
I choose to love you in loneliness…
For in loneliness no one owns you but me,
I choose to adore you from a distance…
For distance will shield me from pain,
I choose to kiss you in the wind…
I choose to hold you in my dreams…
For in my dreams, you have no end.”
― Jalaluddin Rumi
#4. The psychological approach might work for you.
“Immature love says: ‘I love you because I need you.’
Mature love says ‘I need you because I love you.'”
— Erich Fromm
#5. Mother Teresa’s in the house!
“Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.”
— Mother Teresa
#6. Love is hot. Be careful!
“Love is a fire.
But whether it is going to warm
your hearth or burn down your house,
you can never tell.”
— Joan Crawford
#7. Deep love begins with friendship.
“Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses.”
— Ann Landers
#8. The simple truth about love.
“Sometimes the heart sees what is invisible to the eye.”
— H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
#9. Martin Luther King, Jr. knew a thing or two about love.
“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
— Martin Luther King, Jr.
#10. Hmm. This one is deep.
“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”
— Lao Tzu
It was hard to narrow it down to ten, because there are so many more love quotes that are beautiful, touching, and even silly. I love how profound some of these are in their simplicity, like the quote by Martine Luther King, Jr. And the quote by Ann Landers about love being friendship caught fire—what a powerful image, and so true. When love begins with a strong foundation of friendship, there’s a good chance that love will last. I hope you’re lucky enough to experience that in your lifetime.
