A lot of us could name, off the top of our heads, other security people at clubs and venues just like Jemel Roberson, people who would do anything to protect the people in their care, no matter what. People who are just like what witnesses recall about Jemel: he was kind and always smiling; he cared about people; and, when his landlord was sick, he called the hospital every day to show his support. People—security officers on the job—who were happier breaking up a fight with a laugh than getting into one.
This story happens at the unique intersection of two lies:
(1) A good guy with a gun is all that’s needed to stop gun violence;
(2) Black men are not disproportionately targeted by a systemic racism that has infected law enforcement.
Jemel Roberson’s son is nine months old.
