hey kids
0:02
great to see you again so uh today’s
0:04
video is actually sponsored by lubriderm
0:06
uh advanced therapy lotion i’ve showed
0:09
you the advanced therapy cream before
0:11
lubridem’s been a great sponsor of me
0:13
and they make a good product so thank
0:16
you luberderm for sponsoring this video
0:18
uh so what i’m gonna show you today is
0:20
this is a little bit of a tricky video i
0:22
didn’t know what to name it really but
0:24
it’s uh i’m gonna show you
0:26
how to i’m putting mortar i’m building
0:29
uh some steps in my backyard out of flat
0:32
with flagstone and mortar and when you
0:34
first lay the mortar
0:36
uh and lay the the flagstone on this
0:39
in place
0:40
you use a trowel but then to fine tune
0:44
it you kind of need to get in some
0:46
cracks and stuff and i’ve always done
0:47
that with just with my fingers because
0:49
it’s just easy to do and you’ll see that
0:51
in the video
0:53
but uh and then yeah so i’ll show you so
0:56
that’s why it’s sponsored by lubriderm
0:58
as well because you’ll you’ll want to
1:00
re-moisturize your hands uh when you’re
1:02
all done with this uh so but first
1:05
before we do it i do have a dad joke for
1:07
you
1:08
so what was my dad joke for today
1:11
i remember uh so
1:13
why don’t you write why shouldn’t you
1:15
write with a broken pencil
1:18
because it’s pointless
1:20
ah so anyway let’s get started
1:24
all right so here’s our flagstone steps
1:27
that we’re in the middle of
1:28
uh putting in i put in concrete um
1:31
blocks first and then now i’m just
1:33
covering them with concrete steps so i’m
1:36
sorry with flagstone uh on top of the
1:39
concrete
1:40
so
1:41
if you take a look here though so it’s
1:43
been set been setting up for close to a
1:45
week so you want to be careful you know
1:48
walking on them you want to make sure
1:49
that the mortar set so there’s mortar in
1:51
each of these joints here okay
1:53
see the mortar
1:55
but
1:56
as you can see the mortar kind of fell
1:58
through here when we were doing it but i
2:01
didn’t want to mess with it too much
2:02
right um one thing when you’re messing
2:05
or when you’re putting down mortar on
2:06
these steps too is you want to make sure
2:08
this stuff gets cleaned off because it’s
2:10
easy to to leave mortar here and then
2:13
this ends up
2:15
it’s hard to get hard to get it off so
2:16
we came out here and gently scrubbed and
2:19
scrubbed right around the edges you
2:20
still end up with a little bit but i
2:22
think we can get the most of it off
2:23
because uh you know if you’re gonna do a
2:25
if you’re doing it quick and you think
2:27
oh it looks great and then
2:28
it dries it’s hard to get that stuff
2:30
back off so anyway what i’m gonna do now
2:33
with the mortar is see this board that i
2:36
have i’m gonna put that board
2:38
up underneath here
2:40
and i’m just gonna put some wedges on it
2:42
okay and just fill in these cracks with
2:45
mortar
2:47
uh the last little bit so that that can
2:49
dry and then i’ll just let that set
2:50
overnight and then it’ll be fine
2:53
sit up inside
2:54
inside there
2:56
okay
2:58
okay so i just put that board underneath
3:00
there and i just put a couple wedges
3:02
underneath
3:03
too to hold it so that the mud won’t
3:06
fall through there’s a little bit of a
3:07
hole there uh just because things are
3:09
uneven but that’s okay
3:11
um because i’m gonna mix my mud a little
3:13
bit thicker so it’s not gonna be very
3:14
runny
3:15
but i can put it down inside there
3:18
so for this project i’m just using this
3:20
little cup here um and just going to mix
3:23
up
3:24
just a little bit and just add a little
3:26
bit of water at a time because i want to
3:27
keep it
3:28
the right consistency rather than mix up
3:30
a big batch because we’re just gonna use
3:32
a little bit
3:34
okay so that’s just about the right
3:36
consistency right there
3:41
okay so for this job i’m just gonna
3:43
actually just use my fingers
3:45
and kind of work it in there because you
3:47
want to make sure you don’t get it on
3:48
the sides too
3:50
okay
3:53
if you can and we’ll just wipe that off
3:58
see that’s a perfect consistency if you
4:01
if you went thicker it would uh
4:05
it would fall through or if you went uh
4:07
runnier i’m sorry if you went runnier
4:11
it would fall through and we want to
4:12
make sure to pack that good against here
4:14
too right because we’re trying to make
4:16
sure that it’s
4:17
all the way down inside there
4:27
we want that to look
4:28
look nice and not have a hole there
4:30
right so
4:32
i think that’s pretty good
4:39
okay
4:40
and then we’ll come back and kind of
4:41
clean that up
4:44
because we want to make sure it doesn’t
4:45
get
4:46
get
4:47
dry on your stone otherwise
4:50
it’s gonna be hard to get that off okay
4:56
okay that’s that one
5:02
you could wear gloves with this too and
5:04
so i’m going to show you how this ends
5:06
up drying out your hands you can kind of
5:07
see it already right there on my
5:08
fingertips see it’s starting to draw the
5:10
moisture out of my hands let’s go ahead
5:12
and do the one over here too
5:17
all right so here’s this one
5:24
it’s kind of a bigger one on the bottom
5:26
of it
5:28
you want to pack it in good right so
5:30
that it’s not just on the surface want
5:31
to make sure it’s kind of pushed down
5:33
inside there
5:37
so that it holds you don’t want it to
5:38
just be on the top and then it it’s
5:40
going to end up falling through
6:02
this one’s pretty big here so
6:21
and then kind of the same thing you want
6:22
to make sure you
6:24
clean it off good
6:29
see if we can push that up there
6:52
hmm
7:08
okay
7:14
i think that looks good
7:16
okay i’m gonna make my forms for my
7:18
other ones too i’m just gonna put
7:19
another board over here on this bottom
7:21
because i got a good consistency with
7:23
this and i’m so i’m gonna finish that up
7:30
all right so i’m putting these up now
7:32
too underneath here on the risers and
7:35
you can see there’s little gaps where
7:37
the the pieces fit together so this is a
7:40
good one too that um you know you could
7:42
probably wear gloves but i just have
7:44
found that a finger works uh
7:47
so much it’s just so much easier so i’m
7:49
gonna do that and then
7:51
so you end up with the stuff on your
7:54
on your hands but so you just gotta make
7:56
sure to use a moisturizer at the end
7:59
right so but it fills in those gaps
8:02
and
8:04
um when you know this is kind of like a
8:06
in indoors when you’re
8:09
putting up molding if you if you feel
8:12
those cracks in
8:14
uh because those your eyes drawn to that
8:16
right and so by just filling it in and
8:18
taking that shadow away
8:21
it’s gonna make it look a lot nicer
8:23
right so we’re just gonna fill that in
8:25
and there’s actually some along here too
8:27
that i’m going to fill in my my uh mud
8:29
might be a little bit runny for this but
8:32
i normally like a little bit drier so
8:35
i’ll probably add a little bit more to
8:36
it but
8:38
see that it’s just so much easier with
8:40
the finger if i tried to use my trowel
8:44
it’s just hard to
8:46
get it to look right
8:48
right so you just got to make sure you
8:50
clean this up
8:51
when we’re done
8:53
so that that cement’s not sitting on top
8:55
because
8:56
it’ll be harder to get it off once it’s
8:57
dry
9:02
see that
9:03
it just takes that right away
9:05
so your eyes not drawn to that anymore
9:17
just to get rid of the shadow
9:20
do it on the bottom again
9:37
okay but it is rough on your hands
9:42
okay so you can see that my hands took a
9:45
little bit of a beating there
9:47
so
9:48
i’m gonna clean it up but you can see
9:50
that um things kind of got dried out a
9:52
little bit you can see it kind of
9:53
chapped there right so i’m gonna go wash
9:56
them first and then i’m gonna add
9:58
lubriderm
9:59
and there they make this in a this is a
10:01
lotion uh but they also make it in a
10:04
cream too so i think i’ve showed you the
10:06
cream before so i’m going to use the
10:07
lotion this time but let me go clean my
10:09
wash my hands first
10:10
all right so i just washed my hands but
10:12
you can really see where it’s still
10:14
they’re still kind of
10:16
dry and they really feel dry too so it’s
10:19
good to add moisture back to your hands
10:29
and i’ve done this before where i’ve
10:31
washed my hands and then
10:33
didn’t moisturize them and then later on
10:36
in the day you can really feel it
10:38
later on in the night after we’ve done
10:39
it
10:40
after we’ve worked with that mortar
10:44
so
10:47
there you go
10:51
okay so i hope that was helpful for you
10:53
uh
10:54
again just getting in those cracks like
10:57
that it’s just so much easier to use
10:59
your to use your fingers and then just
11:01
make sure you clean up afterwards you
11:02
don’t want to have mortar on your
11:04
flagstone and let it dry so you got to
11:06
keep an eye on that so you get it down
11:08
inside there and then make sure you
11:09
clean it off good so you saw me brushing
11:11
it away
11:12
because you don’t want to have any kind
11:13
of haze stuck on your flagstone but uh
11:17
anyway it is hard on your hands so again
11:19
thank you luberderm for sponsoring this
11:20
video and i thank you for watching and
11:23
god bless you
