I dropped my heart
so many times
shattering pieces of me
along many a dirty floor.
They told me love waited
around the right corner,
but the ones I kept turning
left me gutted and poor.
My lips forgot how to smile,
my soul lost its shine, and
the sun stopped rising;
waking became a chore.
I closed off all the rooms,
pulled down all the shades;
no longer open for visitors,
I put deadbolts on my door.
Disrupting my silent misery
came the pounding of a heart;
someone knocked and entered,
resting his gift upon my shore.
The sun rose in your eyes,
the moon set in your soul;
in the box you gave to me,
was your heart and so much more.
With patience, you collected
the broken bits of me;
kissing them together,
my heart, finally, did soar.
I almost didn’t believe in you,
losing so much faith,
but tucked beneath the darkness
was a speck of hope in my core.
Forever we shall walk
down the winding road of life
and if you listen carefully,
you’ll hear the sound of our love roar.
