This guy’s been written about to hell—pun intended—but as the handlebar mustached-face of the Florida church whose planned Koran burning has the whole world in an uproar, Terry Jones is a perfect candidate for our “Not-So-Good” Man of the Day. I mean, even the Vatican called the planned incident “an outrageous and grave gesture against a book considered sacred by a religious community.”
The Koran burning is a second try after a failed publicity attempt last year, in which Jones posted “Islam is the Devil” on his church’s lawn sign. He’s really only gained the limelight this year because bigots are, evidently, in season. With the mosque debate in New York raising tensions, Jones’ planned stunt is timed just right.
Now, public officials around the globe are making their disapproval known. Hilary Clinton called the burning a “disgraceful plan,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel described it as “abhorrent,” and yesterday’s Man-of-the-Day, General Petraeus castigated the move as hurtful to U.S. troops.
But Jones is blithely unperturbed by all of this. “If we don’t do it, when do we start backing down?” he told ABC television. “It’s something we need to do, it’s a message we need to send.” (An interesting side note: evidently his office walls are decorated with a poster of Braveheart and a picture of former President George W. Bush.)
