Tim Ferriss is an American investor, author, podcaster, and entrepreneur, best known as an angel investor who has helped set up many popular start-ups.
The 5 quotes below from Tim Ferriss have shaped my thinking and changed my behaviour over the last year. I revisit them often.
I hope you enjoy the following gems as much as I have…
1. “It’s not enough to have the right answers. You have to have the right questions.”
Asking the right questions leads us to better answers. If we think of thinking as a process of asking and answering questions, then to get better answers, we have to ask better questions.
Asking the right questions is an ongoing process. The one who gains the most is you. Your ability to improve the questions you ask yourself will improve the quality of your life.
2. “What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.”
Fear is used to point you in the direction of what is most important to you. If you aren’t afraid of doing something, it generally means you don’t find it very important, or you wouldn’t have that fear.
Fear can help us drill down to the things that we simply must do. Part of that is going to entail getting over that fear, or learning to live with discomfort so that you can still get the things done that need getting done.
3. “People will choose unhappiness over uncertainty.”
Can you think of something in your life that you’re unhappy with and want to change, but the fear or risks of change and uncertainty are stopping you from making the big leap?
Most of us have had way more successes than failures when we took a big leap into the unknown.
If you aren’t willing to risk the uncertainty of change then you’ve basically accepted staying unhappy in that situation. Essentially you’re still risking something — you’re risking your future happiness.
4. “You are the average of the five people you associate with most, so do not underestimate the effects of your pessimistic, unambitious, or disorganized friends. If someone isn’t making you stronger, they’re making you weaker.”
Successful people flock together, inspiring each other to ask for more from themselves and others.
You don’t necessarily need to prune your real-life friends list like you would your social media connections, but you do need to cultivate relationships with positive people.
5. “It isn’t enough to think outside the box. Thinking is passive. Get used to acting outside the box.”
Thinking outside the box simply means that you’re willing to consider different solutions and methods for reaching your desired outcome.
This exposes you to new perspectives and ways of doing things that you would not have come to alone. It will also ensure that you avoid short-sightedness.
I’m 100% sure, if you apply one of the above quotes, you’re mindset will be a little bit better. You don’t have to use everything, just pick one quote, apply it, and see what happens. For me, it changed everything.
