Whether it is NASM or ISSA that you want to opt for, both of these certifications are widely reckoned and are genuine value-adds to every trainer’s profile. So while choosing one, it is natural for you to feel puzzled.
But if you understand the fundamentals of both certifications, deciding will be really easy. Let us help you out.
Differences between ISSA and NASM
- ISSA is a general training certificate, whereas NASM is a corrective exercise certificate.
- ISSA is accredited by DEAC, whereas NCCA accredits NASM.
- ISSA offers only one study package, whereas NASM provides multiple packages with various study materials.
- The first-time pass rate of ISSA is around 90%, but it is relatively low for NASM, about 64%
1. Focus of the certification
Now that you know the fundamental difference between both, let us now concentrate on the certification difference that each course offers.
- ISSA- This is an excellent certificate if you aspire to be a personal trainer who is just starting. The course will give a slight emphasis on powerlifting and reactive training. The training focuses mainly on the strength curve. This training is also great for athletes and powerlifters aspiring to reach the peak of their performance. But talking about the overall curriculum of the certification, you can put it in the general category.
- NASM- It majorly focuses on muscular imbalance and training of corrective exercises. It has quite a progressive training model compared to the others. Taking up this certification, you will also be able to deal with post-rehabilitation clients. The certification will start with stability training. This stage will ensure that all the clients are fit and equipped enough to move to higher and advanced training levels. This certification also helps athletes to emphasize on their peak performances. It has an advanced training known as a performance enhancement specialist or PES. This training works more effectively than ISSA training.
2. Quality of study material
- ISSA- It has only one package which comes with all the study materials.
- NASM- The study material here would depend on the package that you purchase.
3. Test Information and requirements
- ISSA- You need to answer short questions, true/false, multiple-choice questions, and case studies in your ISSA exams. The main challenge here is to answer the case study correctly. You will be given a random individual who has different goals and capabilities, and your task will be to develop a progressive exercise regime that would fit their needs.
- NASM- Once you purchase the package, you will have six weeks to study and write the exam. The test would contain 120 MCQs, and you will get 2 hours to complete it. You need 70% to get the certification.
4. Recertification
- ISSA- You would need to apply for recertification every two years. The recertification costs are also cheap.
- NASM- For recertification, you would need 20 hours of continuing education. The cost of recertification is expensive compared to ISSA.
Conclusion
In terms of quality and recognition, you might want to prefer NASM. Their training model is advanced, and in general, most of the employers prefer NASM over ISSA.
