In an effort to further explore the myriad and "Komplicated" musical tastes of the modern "post-Black" denizens of the world, we present Spin City, which will feature recommendations from some of the world’s finest DJs, Joining resident turntablist DJ Jedi, we're proud to present the musical musings of Brutha Gimel (also known as Gimel Hooper), a double threat who not only is well known for his skills on the wheels, but also as a spoken word artist of considerable renown and one of the co-founders of LA's long-running venue Da Poetry Lounge. We now present Gimel's favorites for this week …
- "Menage A Trois," Austin Brown
Here's a little classic soul bounce with a modern twist to it from a member of The Jackson family. No, not Reggie & Jessie but Jermain and LaToya. Haha. Hey, the kid got style and soul with a very down to earth approach to music. He's not a bad dancer either. I have a feeling will be hearing more from him. Get your soul claps ready!
- "Auntie Maria's Crib" (remix), Nitty Scott MC feat. Action Bronson, The Kid Daytona
(free download available in this week's #musicmonday column)
Crazy how I see the title of a song and just gotta hear it. Well, that's what happened with this joint and a few seconds into I got the feeling of being in Auntie Maria's Crib. They did a swell job of capturing the moment while flexing in the studio. Unless, the studio is in Auntie Maria's crib. I've never heard of Nitty Scott. She got skills and good cadence. Auntie Maria's crib was a cozy introduction.
- "Can't Stand Me," Tech N9ne feat. Krizz Kaliko
(free download available in this week's #musicmonday column)
Now I've been peeping songs from Tech N9ne for some time now and what always comes across is his delivery and skill. I must add that he has imagination and good breathe control while delivering his bars as well. He's kind of eccentric and tantric with confidence in who he is and I respect that.
- "T.N.T.," ¡Mayday! feat. Dead Prez
(free download available in this week's #musicmonday column)
Yeah! If you don't know by now, I love revolutionary hip hop music in all forms. Rather it be party, social, militant or teaching. Which is why "T.N.T." made the column this week. Again, I'd never heard of ¡Mayday! but I had heard of Dead Prez and when I saw that name attached I knew what I was in for. I like what I got.
- "Talk To 'Em," 360
(free download available in this week's #musicmonday column)
I really feel like there's a next generation of rappers who will develop a new sound with an appreciation for where the music comes from. I think 360 has the skills and sound to be the bridge to the future. The beat is classic. The flow is modern. The bars are fierce. Maturity and one liners brings it home.
