After invoking, “Finders Keepers”…
I spent most of the day helping my brother organize the garage at the industrial building that’s both his office and design center. My back is killing me, which had just as much to do with moving big ass, heavy shelves and my extremely oversize desk. I bought that desk ten years ago at a used office furniture joint for $200. Sorry to steer off course. Back to the story.
My brother is a fashion designer and as we were moving stuff around I noted that he has my mom’s sewing machine from when we were little kids. I told him I knew where our old electric typewriter was but I wondered whatever happened to the manual one we had when I was much younger. As a writer and blogger it would be very cool to have.
Thirty minutes later I picked up something in a hard case and wondered aloud what it was. My brother told me it was the typewriter I had asked about. After invoking, “Finders Keepers” I took it outside and placed it on one of the aforementioned big ass shelves.
For years I’ve wanted a vintage typewriter for my office. It would be cool to have and to sit it next to my Niedermayer Brothers (Anaheim Ducks) bobblehead. I said one bobblehead but technically it’s two bobbleheads with one bobblehead base. Now I have one and it’s the one I first typed on. How cool is that?
As I was fixing dinner tonight a thought popped into my head. My brother’s connection to our mom is in that sewing machine and mine is with the two old typewriters. When my 14-year-old Drama Queen is an adult what of mine will she connect with? Or will there be anything at all? I guarantee that as soon as my head hits the pillow tonight, my brain will begin asking that question repeatedly.
If I had to guess, I would say that it would be tennis. Possibly from the fact that she took lessons when she was young and that I encouraged her to get playing again and she’s playing high school tennis. Another possibility could be the gash I put in her face with a tennis racket when she was seven or eight. She walked up behind me as I was playing and I caught her on a back swing. It was a total accident. Let’s hope it’s not that.
Is there something special of yours that your kids will treasure when they get to their thirties and forties? Leave a comment and tell me.
I really enjoy when you write these heartfelt posts. A lot. I think the fact that both you and your brother have these symbols of bonding with your mother are just beautiful. I personally think Drama Queen will enjoy having the published pieces her dad wrote. As far as it goes with my kids? Well, my girl and I share a bond with knitting, crochet, and quilting. I think she will always have that in her memory and continue with it. My boy loves music as much as I do. If he could enjoy anything of mine, it would be… Read more »
