Hey, Good Men Project readers, if you’re single and looking for love, check out our partner MeetMindful, a dating site where good men finish first.
The waters can get so murky around things in dating.
Should I email that person? Should I write that person back? Should I say “yes” to a first date?
And the often major toughie: Should I say yes to a second date?
So, how do you know?
Maybe you find yourself feeling guilty for saying no to a second date even when we’re just not feeling it. Or maybe you say no to virtually every second datebecause none of those first dates check off all the “must haves” on your list.
Finding the sweet spot between staying open to possibilities and being clear on your values-aligned deal-breakers can be tricky. So here are a few hints from the first date with someone to help you decide whether or not to say yes to a second.
1. You enjoyed yourself.
This may sound obvious, but we so often make dating more complicated than it needs to be.
Your level of basic enjoyment is a great sign it’s worth seeing where things could go with this human being, isn’t it? Don’t even worry about why you enjoyed yourself. Just look at the fact that you did as a breadcrumb worth following.
2. You just felt good after date #1.
Your body picks up on cues your conscious mind doesn’t.
When you get all up in your head with nitpicking at “Well he didn’t have this…” or “She did too much of this…” you drown out your intuitive signals. Tune into the gut-level energy from your time together and you’ll get some powerful unfiltered feedback of how you responded to this person on the deepest level.
3. You find yourself smiling when you tell your friends about your date.
How you share your date’s details holds some sweet hints about whether date #2 is a yay or nay.
4. You had a good feeling when you first said hello.
Again, your body is offering constant (less than conscious) signals pointing toward whether this person could be a great partner for you.
No need to let your logical mind trump that initial response at this stage—you can ask all the important questions down the road. For now, if date #1 struck some spark in you, it’s likely worth giving date #2 a chance.
5. The best tip on whether to say yes to a second date is more of a “hit” than a “hint”: Your gut gives you the thumbs up.
Is your intuition giving you a thumbs up or thumbs down on learning more about this person?
Because that’s what the early dating phase is mostly about—data collection—and your intuitive center will give you the most true-to-you feedback imaginable if you really tune into it.
There are no “shoulds” in dating.
If it doesn’t feeling like a thumbs up, you’re allowed to express gratitude for what you learned on this date and kindly move forward, guilt-free.
Slow down and tune in. When you really pay attention to your dates in a non-judgmental, present way, you’ll know when a second date is a yes and when it’s a no.
Trust yourself and enjoy the process. Gorgeous love is on its way.
