What’s the first
foreign city
you ever traveled to?
As you read this, I am standing/sitting/possibly laying down (I’m not exactly sure WHEN you’re going to read this) for the first time on foreign soil. While I am fairly well-versed in the terrain of my own country, I only recently picked up my passport and decided to book a flight to visit friends I’ve made via social media, but have yet to meet in real life. And while there are many places I could visit where I would find such people, I decided to start with the ones I know in Los Angeles.
Where it is sunny and warm.
I’m actually writing this before I’ve left, so I have no idea what it feels like to be in a place you can’t legally call your home. I can’t imagine it being TOO different, but maybe that says more about my imagination than anything else.
I realize I’m rather old to be traveling out of country for the first time, but for much of the life I had neither the motive or funds for such fanciful ventures. I feel like now that I’ve started, though, it’s going to become a much more frequent occurrence.
So, what was the first time you ever left your country and where did you go? And why?
I believe my first city outside Denmark was Malmö, Sweden. I went there with my granny, I must have been 4 or so. She went there to buy sugar, chocolate, and a few other things that were cheaper than at home., but she also took me to see the castle. My first trip outside Scandinavia was to Italy (Verona, Venice) a 7, and to Dublin, Ireland, later the same year. Both of those trips were with my mum. As a Scandinavian, “going abroad” probably has very different connotations than it does for, say, Americans. I’ll be visiting 7 different foreign… Read more »
Hi. where are you from, Allan? I’m from Mexico and the first time I travelled abroad was to Orlando, Florida to visit DisneyWorld at age 13. More than 10 yrs passed for me before I travelled overseas again. That time to NYC because I find it fascinating. And since there I’ve been to Ireland, UK, France, Spain and Japan, apart from multiple times back to NYC. It’s true, once you get the travel bug, you can’t stop. Cheers!
Canada, eh?
It’s funny how some don’t see Canada as “foreign.” I would have to say Canada as well.
At the age of 42, I left my country of Australia for the first time in August 2012 when I traveled to Auckland, New Zealand for a week. I went there for work, to assist some colleagues with preparing technical documentation. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. I stayed in a great hotel; New Zealanders in general were very friendly; I didn’t see much of Auckland, but what I saw I liked a lot; and I also got to see relatives whom I had last seen in person in the late 1990s. Similar to Allan, for reasons financial and… Read more »
