Independence is really an illusion.
We are actually dependent on many people, services, and businesses for the things we need to survive. Many countries are probably not completely democratic and much unfairness still occurs-after all, elites still call most of the shots. Financially we are totally dependent on others for our success, even the elites.
If we claim to be a self-made man or woman it is a lie because without our customers, or those that helped us achieve what we did or believed in us, we would have and be nothing. Like I said, independence is an illusion, however, we can still be happy, grateful and appreciative for all the support we have received from others, as well as finding value in the democratic institutions that exist in their imperfection, and when looking in the mirror give ourselves an acknowledgement for all the other people that we support, encourage and believe in. Now I would say that is a pretty good life.
People who believe independence is something to base a national identity or their own character on are reflecting a major issue within traditional masculinity. That is, the inability to be intimate or vulnerable with others. This deep fear of trusting and relying on others is in total denial of the hard facts proving our innate need for the services and support of our fellow humans. Lie to yourselves if you want but you would be dead if not for other people. Get used to it. Be grateful for what others have done for you.
Now it is your turn to give back.
