hey kids so today i’m going to show you how to install a fan a ceiling fan uh and i
0:07
uh hunter fan actually reached out to me wanting to sponsor this video um this is something people have asked me for and
0:13
so i thought it’s a perfect opportunity to to work with hunter uh you know they like what i’m doing
0:19
with my channel and so they wanted to support me and so and it made sense so uh
0:24
so installing a fan really you know it’s really not all that hard as long as you just pay attention to what you’re doing and take it in baby steps that’s what i
0:31
try to teach on my channels to you know just slow things down and and break it down into small steps so so you
0:37
can figure it out um you know hunter fans is a quality fan they’ve been around for 135 years
0:44
uh they’re designed to be quiet and to be wobble free if if you’ve ever seen a fan maybe a
0:49
cheaper fan and when it gets going fast it starts wobbling which can be a little bit scary
0:55
uh these are meant to not do that so um you know so first you’ll need to pick
1:00
out your fan uh you can go to www.hunterfan.com
1:06
and you can look at their complete selection or they’re also available in lowe’s and other and other hardware stores and also have
1:13
a link in the description of this video to the fan that i’m using i pick out
1:20
this particular fan because it’s low profile so it sits closer to the ceiling
1:25
so because if it got down too far you know i’m fairly tall that wouldn’t be good right so you need to make sure that it’s
1:31
it’s up there higher or they make some that you know you can get a down rod to make it longer so if you have a high
1:37
ceiling then the fan can come down a little bit lower so um anyway so before we do this i have a
1:44
dad joke for you of course right so uh you know i was gonna tell you a joke about ceiling fans
1:50
but it was over your head ah so anyway let’s get started
1:55
all right so i thought i’d show you this this is just this is disconnected right there’s nothing there’s no power running
2:00
to it or anything but this is basically what you’re gonna this is what’s behind the the ceiling this is
2:07
see these nails here these are actually pounded into a stud for the most part you know obviously
2:13
it’s going to vary depending on what your setup is but basically you’re going to have a junction box like that
2:20
in the ceiling where the light attaches okay that we’re going to attach the fan to and then sticking out of that again this
2:26
is a basic real i’m showing you real basic you got a black wire and then you got a white wire and then
2:33
you got the ground that’s what that is okay and basically um we’re gonna
2:38
when we open up that light uh when we remove the light we’re gonna have three
2:43
wires sticking down just like that right and so first thing we need to do is cut
2:49
the power right we want the power off and then we’re going to end up removing our light and we’re going to have this
2:55
sticking down that we’re going to um attach the we’re going to detach the existing light
3:01
and then we’re going to attach that fan to okay so i thought i’d show you that first just so you understand so you know what to
3:07
expect and what’s behind there uh before we take it apart all right
3:13
okay so this is the light i’m going to remove like i said i really like this light i
3:19
actually replaced it about a year ago but i’m gonna go ahead and pull it down and we’re gonna replace it with a fan
3:25
and then like i said i’ll move this light to somewhere else because i really like it i don’t wanna
3:31
donate it i want to hang on to it so uh anyway i’ll show you what that looks like we just got to start taking it
3:36
apart you know there’s going to be um like i said it’s it’s different for every every light you know it’s going to be a
3:42
little bit different i’ll probably start here and unscrew that but first i still haven’t cut the power yet
3:48
um so before i start doing that start messing around right make sure to cut the power but uh
3:55
so we’re just going to start taking it apart and so we can get back to this part right where that that um junction box is
4:02
sticking out of the ceiling that we’re gonna uh attach the fan to okay so i’m out at my junction box
4:10
and i know that number nine this is the one for that i need to flip off it’s on
4:15
right now i just need to flip it off and then that will cut the power to that light so i just wanted to show you this
4:20
i think i showed it in a previous video but wanted to walk you through that again you got to go to your panel and you got to figure out
4:26
uh which circuit it’s on um and i do have a circuit breaker
4:32
detective video so you could refer to that to figure out which circuits it’s on if you need to
4:37
but i already know that this one’s nine so i’m turning that off right so just flip it to the left we’ll
4:43
go check and make sure that light’s off now okay so the light is off and i’m just
4:48
going to double check with the switch um i’ll try to make it loud so you can hear it yeah so there’s nothing
4:57
there’s no power running to that so i’m safe to go ahead and start disassembling this and um yeah let me just get into it
5:05
um i think this just was like this
5:12
and again this is going to vary depending on what uh what your lamp looks like so i couldn’t
5:19
remember what this is like so let’s just it had uh here that’s
5:25
gonna stay there so it just had these this little uh screw on the top
5:31
um that was just screwed up onto there and then now it’s got another nut that needs to come off
5:39
so i’m gonna work on that
5:48
okay so i moved the camera a little bit so you can maybe see these uh these are caps with that are threaded that are
5:54
gonna go right over the top of these uh these bolts that are sticking down
5:59
that that’s what’s holding it up there so i’m gonna remove those um let’s see here so you gotta unscrew
6:06
that i’ll show you what that looks like when i get it off here
6:12
yeah so it just looks like that and it’s got threads in in it right so that’s what’s holding
6:18
that up and then there’s one on the other side too try to get to it
6:27
okay and now that should just come down there we go okay so we got the wires
6:34
coming out here so there’s a black wire there’s the ground and here’s the white
6:41
wire like we talked like i showed you at the beginning okay got a black wire a white wire and a ground pretty
6:48
straightforward so um i always like to add a little bit of electrical tape you don’t have to it
6:53
doesn’t ask you to i just always it’s like one less one more thing to kind of hold those wires together
6:59
okay so all i’m going to do now is i’m just going to unscrew these caps
7:04
okay and that’s just what holds those guys together uh here we go so basically that’s all
7:10
that is that thing’s just screwed right on there and it screws the wires together okay so now that’s that okay
7:18
and then this one here just unscrew it okay and then that sets that free so now
7:26
we’ve got these two free and it’s still being held up by this one wire here it’s being held by the
7:33
ground um this thing isn’t too heavy but i gotta i’m gonna have to figure out how that’s
7:41
attached there let’s see how did i attach that so we can undo this maybe this is all we
7:47
need to do
7:55
nope okay i think it’s wrapped around i did a pretty good job wrapping this
8:02
guy together so let’s see and again this is gonna vary so it’s
8:08
gonna whoa there we go good thing i had a hold up so that set it free okay so now we got
8:14
we have our black wire our white wire and then we have our ground hanging out and hanging down right here
8:21
all right so the first piece of advice i would give you if you’re ever
8:26
building anything that comes in a kit like this where it’s got all kinds of different pieces is you lay
8:33
everything out lay everything out first and then most instruction manuals will have
8:41
a parts list and then you just walk through and see what each piece does and it’ll
8:46
also help you when you’re you know as you’re putting the fan up to go oh okay i recognize that piece
8:51
because i already had some familiarity with it right and then that uh hunter actually does it where they have little baggies
8:58
with each uh you know sets of screws or whatever you’re going to need so that it just makes it that much
9:04
easier to identify it and then you know even even before you get started just
9:09
kind of read through this it’s not that big of a pamphlet uh so you just kind of walk through it and
9:15
just kind of see what to expect oh okay that’s that and then that’s that right so just make your install go so much easier and then you
9:22
know there could be a part that’s missing and you’re frustrated you’re like ah where is that thing it’s just best to
9:27
just check everything make sure that everything’s there before you get started
9:33
all right so the first thing we need to do is install the bracket and so this is what the bracket looks
9:38
like on this particular one and see these little rubber feet here that actually goes up against
9:45
the ceiling to kind of give it some stability right it’s got it’s a little bit of flex to it so it um mounts up there
9:53
and kind of keeps it from that probably helps with a little bit of the wobble so basically what we need to do is
10:00
you’re just going to feed these wires these are all off right i’m going to feed these wires through here
10:06
like that and then i’m going to secure that like that okay so you got your white your white wire your black wire and your ground
10:13
right here okay just like that and i’m going to secure that so that’s what i’m going to do right now
10:19
basically with just a couple screws so the way this fan is and the instructions try to make it
10:26
kind of easy for you see how it’s got that star on there it tells you which bag you’re looking for
10:31
and in this particular bag it had these wood screws okay that’s what it came with and then
10:38
so it tells you you can either use these um to get into a stud which i always like to get into a stud
10:45
uh or um you can actually the screws that came
10:50
with your junction box that’s what they call that that junction box up there
10:55
right um you can screw these things into there so um what i’m probably going to do i’m
11:02
going to get one into the actual junction box and then one into a stud okay because i know there’s a stud right
11:09
here and this gives me all kinds of options there’s lots of slots on this and so i can uh
11:14
i can do it that way so that’s what i’m gonna do okay so this one is what’s considered
11:21
the machine screw the one that’s going into the the actual outlet box okay
11:29
okay that’s that one and then i actually you know you can use the
11:35
screws that came with it i really like these screws so this is the screw that i’m going to use but you could the ones that came with it were these
11:42
right so i’m just gonna use this one and i’m gonna get it into a stud out here on the on this side
12:01
okay that’s nice and solid that’s not going anywhere right so you just want to make sure because if you’re if your junction box
12:08
is wobbly that’s not going to be a good thing right you want to make sure that that’s nice and secure okay okay the next thing it says to do
12:16
is is this at the bottom here i’m rather than read it all i’m going to just walk you through that you want to take this feed it through
12:23
here and you have these holes here and they’re going to line up with these holes okay i’m going to put that housing on right
12:30
there okay now those holes are still there and then we put this on this is next
12:36
that’s what that ring is and we just basically put that right there like that and then this is
12:42
the last piece and you got the three holes again right so we’re gonna feed that through
12:49
just like that okay that’s that step and i just want to
12:54
keep that like that and then i move on to the next one and i’m going to put some screws into
12:59
there to to hold that okay so when you put this piece on make sure
13:05
you see how you got the three holes on the outside and then you got this this one hole over here by itself make
13:10
sure that lines up with this right because if you put this on here and if that hole is not there you’re gonna be
13:18
spinning this thing around you’re not going to be able to get that that last little ground hole ground screw in there okay
13:24
so let’s go ahead and we tighten this up tighten up on the long ones but don’t
13:30
tighten it all the way just get it started okay
13:40
part way down let’s even um we have this little shorter screw that actually is the ground
13:46
let’s get that that guy in there and that’ll help everything line up
13:54
i’ll show you a close-up of this in just a second
14:01
my hand would be in the way for you right now if i try to show it right now but okay and then this last guy here
14:12
actually this is the last guy
14:24
okay so those are all loosely in there let me just tighten them down
14:33
nice and easy
14:46
we’ll leave the ground one loose a little bit because i’m guessing we’re going to attach a ground wire to that
14:56
okay so that’s what that looks like inside there i just attached those
15:04
okay i actually have i cut my own little ground wire here that i’m gonna put on that ground
15:10
okay on that ground screw and then we’re just gonna go ahead and screw that down
15:17
and okay and then we’ll be able to screw all
15:23
the grounds together okay so this particular fan actually has a remote so you may or may not have that but
15:31
basically you just gotta piece it together so these two are gonna go to
15:36
uh the wiring in my house okay and then these are gonna connect to the
15:42
fan okay and so basically it tells me and so i just read the instructions blue
15:48
goes to blue that sure makes it easy right blue goes to blue so basically you
15:54
just take these two wires like this and you spin them together and then you use the cap
16:00
and then you spin that together okay just take that
16:05
spin it all together make sure you get a good connection there okay and then the next one is a little bit uh
16:13
tricky because you’ve got you’ve got a yellow one and there’s no yellow right so what are we gonna do we’re
16:19
actually gonna it tells you to connect the yellow wire to the black wire okay so you actually need to take a look
16:26
at that we’re going to connect the yellow to the black okay
16:33
we’re going to get a good connection there and then we spin those together
16:39
okay okay so now we’re ready to go
16:47
and that’s just going to go down inside there like that okay and then we’ll be able to connect
16:55
let’s put these kind of together so that they’re all there okay and then we’ll connect the
17:02
the black the white and the ground once we hang this from the from the ceiling okay okay so now we’re
17:10
just gonna take those two holes there and they’re gonna hook onto this side over here okay now that we got our
17:17
our uh receiver hooked up on the inside let’s go ahead and do that
17:22
okay so you’re getting close now right so now we need to make sure we
17:28
have our uh our spinnies right actually i just need one more
17:38
okay so that way the ground can attach so if you remember we had the white okay
17:45
so the white wire we actually had an extra white wire right so here’s our white wire our white wire
17:54
and there’s one white wire coming out of the coming out of the top right so we’re going to spin all those
18:00
together okay so we just take this cap off remember the power is off so we don’t
18:06
need to worry about anything there okay and then we just spin all of these
18:11
together we’re going to put them all together like that and then we just spin them all together
18:21
so these my uh old light that was up here this is where these ones come from so
18:27
in the packet these are orange but i’m just reusing the ones i had okay spin that together nice and good
18:33
okay that’s that and then now we have the black wire right and then we’re gonna have the
18:41
ground too so let’s go ahead and see what we got for the ground we got the ground
18:46
coming from my outlet and then i got a ground coming from here okay
18:54
coming from my bracket so i’m going to spin all those together too the ground i connected in here the
19:00
ground here and then the ground that’s uh coming from my outlet we’re going to
19:05
spin all those together okay so the last thing we’re going to do is just spin the black wire with the
19:11
black wire all right we’re going to line those up and spin them together okay
19:21
just like that okay and if you want you know you could add uh if you’re
19:26
worried about this coming apart too you could add um a piece of
19:32
piece of electrical tape i’ll do that occasionally just to make sure if i’m worried about the wires coming undone so you could
19:38
just use just make sure you use a good one because if you use a bad one you know they unravel on you so
19:47
okay so we’re gold and we can just put all that right back in there so now this is just going to come up
19:52
here and everything’s tucked in i’m just going to go ahead and put in one screw for now
19:58
because i just want to double check everything make sure we got it
20:04
and just get that thing started okay
20:09
yeah there we go
20:16
[Applause] i just gotta attach the other you know
20:22
there’s three other two right we’ve already got one attached now we’re just attaching the one on this side
20:31
okay and then there’ll be one more on the other side okay we’re almost there look at that so
20:38
and then you get to choose the color that you want the fan to be
20:44
they usually give you two colors depending on what color you want facing down for the fan blades
20:51
so that’s kind of cool and we’ll decide which one of those we want to do okay so i think we’re gonna go ahead and
20:59
finish this up okay and that guy
21:11
my uh my ladder and my height is just uh there’s a step if i had to step in
21:17
between it’d be perfect but um all right let me do that other one and we’ll move on
21:23
okay so now all we do here is this is a canopy ring right that we put on there before and all that does is we just
21:29
push it straight on up and it locks into place beautiful okay so now like i said you
21:38
have a fan blade this way or this one these are this like a gray and then like
21:44
a light oak and all we’re going to do here is we’re just going to slide that right in there and then we just put three screws up
21:50
inside and we got to do that four different times okay so we’re attaching the fan blades
21:55
and all you do is just you know you want to attach and just i say finger tight but maybe not quite
22:04
finger tight maybe a little bit tighter than that you know just to make sure that it’s not going to fall so we can just use that
22:10
and we’re going to go ahead and screw that in
22:15
i like to get all the blades up first and then i’ll come back and i’ll tighten
22:21
all these things see what we did there all right so when
22:27
you’re doing these each one it comes with a washer and a little mini screw
22:34
really a bolt i guess you’d call it but um yup and then just make sure your blades are all facing the same way
22:40
right you’ve got your gray facing down if that’s the color you’ve chosen right so you’re not surprised when you
22:47
get down and go oops i’ve got
22:52
three gray fan blades and one light oak right so just pay attention to what
22:57
you’re doing all right i’ll finish this up you get the hang of this pretty straightforward you just gotta
23:04
just gotta hand tighten those um for now and then we’ll come back and we’ll tighten them all up at the at the end
23:12
just make sure they’re secured so they don’t fall okay want to make sure those are
23:20
snug though now okay okay so we’re back to where we
23:27
started okay okay
23:32
there you go those are all secured now we’re gonna attach the light it tells me to do is see these these
23:39
holes right here these three holes i’m gonna put a screw into two of them okay so
23:47
because and then i don’t it doesn’t it says it doesn’t matter which two because you’ll see in just a second the
23:54
the piece that’s gonna attach to this and don’t screw them in all the way okay
23:59
i’m just gonna screw it in part way and then the other one’s just gonna fit right on top of it you’ll see
24:04
or the the piece that we’re putting up here’s okay not all the way okay and then now
24:12
i’m going to take this piece here okay and it’s going to feed i got to feed the wires through here
24:20
okay just like that and then those
24:28
the screws that i have i just put the head over one and where’s the other one just gotta find it there we go and then
24:34
i just twist it to the right okay i don’t think it’s quite on there
24:40
we go twist it to the right okay and now i can
24:46
just go ahead and attach that the rest of the way i want to make sure it’s secured
24:54
okay and then this one actually let’s go ahead and put another screw in the one on the opposite side here okay
25:10
okay and then we’ll finish this one up
25:16
okay so that’s nice and tight okay so now in order to attach the light it
25:22
says to put we got to put two screws in here same thing again don’t
25:29
tighten them all the way okay and it says it doesn’t matter which two and you’ll see why
25:37
because we’ll have this unit with uh these holes here
25:43
right so and we want to we want to attach this first
25:51
so we want to plug that in let’s see make sure you got it facing the right
25:56
way it says aaa so
26:02
kind of makes it dummy proof for you okay so now that’s all attached now
26:08
we’re just gonna put this guy up here and we put it on that
26:14
that screw and twist it a little bit so that it is where it needs to be
26:22
ah come on
26:28
okay okay that’s where it wants to go now we’re
26:35
gonna go ahead and let’s attach the one
26:46
okay screw that down let’s screw this one in because we’ve still got a little bit of wiggle room let’s try to screw it
26:52
in okay nice and tight same thing again
26:59
make sure all these are tight like i said it’s good to leave it loose for a time
27:05
but then you want to make sure everything’s tight at the end okay all right now we’re just going to put in
27:11
our bulbs
27:20
okay make sure that’s secure just hand tight though right
27:32
okay so we’re gold in there and then this last piece is just gonna go on here
27:40
it should be pretty straightforward how it goes on i think you can see the notches here so just line up your
27:46
notches that there you go pretty simple
27:53
right so there you go we got the hunter logo there for you all right so
27:59
now we just got to turn our power back on and we’ll see what we got all right so we’re just
28:05
turning our power back on there we go let’s go check it out
28:12
okay this fan is too cool um so it actually comes with a remote
28:17
um and so and it’s pretty easy i can just turn on the light like that okay pretty cool
28:26
turn the light on turn the light off okay and then it actually has the different
28:31
speeds so i can have that’s one
28:36
that’s two that’s three or if i want the fan off
28:42
and just the light i hit zero okay so like i said you know i’m pretty tall so i had to
28:49
pick something with a lower uh profile so make sure you do that make sure you check that out before you
28:55
buy your fan because you don’t want it to be too low so i’ll show you this in just a second
29:00
but inside here there’s actually a switch uh to change the direction of the fan
29:06
because because you want it going a certain way during winter in a certain way during summer you want the you know
29:12
during the winter you want the warm air to be pushing down but during the summer you want to have
29:20
that warm air uh going up right so that it keeps it cooler down here so um anyway
29:28
i’ll show you what that looks like um and as you can see it’s pretty pretty sleek it’s a pretty cool looking uh
29:34
looking fan that’s why i chose it nice and clean and uh yeah so and then you know over
29:41
time these get a little dusty so you just want to come over here and just um how i normally do it is i’ll just take
29:48
like one of those lysol wipes and i’ll just wipe it you know get on a ladder and and wipe it down good um you know
29:54
there’s there’s actually uh uh cleaners that are meant to go right off the right on it too so and then that’ll
30:02
take the dust away too because it does accumulate no matter what you do right so all right so let me show you that
30:07
switch real quick okay remember how we removed this now we just need to slide it
30:13
pull it off there and then there’s that switch okay and you just gotta flip it for
30:19
winter or flip it for summer okay okay all right so this is for summer
30:28
so this is counterclockwise for the summer okay and then we flip that switch to the
30:33
right if for winter okay and then it takes the takes the warm air and pushes it down
30:39
for us so then you just want to if you want to mount your uh remote
30:44
you just put it here there’s just a little uh catcher you know a little place where
30:50
you can actually keep that remote or you can keep the remote wherever you want this way i guess it wouldn’t get lost right if you just all you do is remove
30:57
these screws here
31:03
okay and then you just put this back on here okay screw that back in
31:24
okay line up the other hole and put it
31:30
in
31:37
okay that just goes up right over the top like that and then you just need to put this guy on here it just slides
31:43
right down like this like that and then the remote just goes
31:52
like let’s see like that beautiful
31:59
okay so there’s my new light and fan in my space you probably recognize this space i’ve done a lot of interviews
32:05
here um so it’d be nice to actually have some air circulation in in this space uh you know and in all
32:11
honesty it probably took me about an hour and a half to install it i just went real slow and you know took my time and i did have
32:18
some interruptions while i was doing it too so i have my dogs bothering me so uh so anyway i’m sure
32:24
that you can you could do this if you just take it slow and um yeah and just be methodical about it the
32:30
thing i like about it uh the most actually um i mean i love the air circulation but
32:35
look how quiet it is you can’t even hear it so uh yeah it’s a
32:40
very well designed fan so anyway thank you for watching i hope this was helpful for you so
32:45
um hopefully it gives you the confidence to try it for yourself and god bless you
