The ad, which took the form of a “Would You Rather…” game, asked users whether they would rather slap pop artist Rihanna or punch ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. The game was meant to push the envelope with offensive questions but clearly went too far. Brown pleaded guilty in 2009 to felony assault after Rihanna accused him of beating her and trying to push her out of a car. Snapchat quickly pulled the ad and issued an apology, but Rihanna called out the messaging service. “I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb,” Rihanna said. “You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to [domestic violence] victims, and made a joke of it!” Social agrees with Rihanna’s condemnation, giving the ad 91 percent negative sentiments and calling it “insensitive.” Since the controversy erupted, Snapchat has lost $800 million from its market value, according to CNN. –Hugo Guzman
