She went from bartender to long-shot contender in New York’s 14th Congressional District to the newest star of the Democratic Party, shocking the Establishment while running as a democratic socialist with a landslide primary victory over 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley. If the 28-year-old Ocasio-Cortez advances in the general election, she will be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. She’s running on an unabashedly progressive platform, one that has been mocked by conservatives like Fox News pundit Sean Hannity, even though it is representative of the views of a growing faction on the left—abolish ICE, institute universal healthcare, deliver higher education for all, ban assault weapons, and designate housing as a human right. But Ocasio-Cortez isn’t just facing criticism from Republicans. She has received a chilly reception from Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who said: “They made a choice in one district … it is not to be viewed as something that stands for everything else.” Added Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.): “I think that you can’t win the White House without the Midwest and I don’t think you can go too far to the left and still win the Midwest.” However, Pelosi and Duckworth might be wise to act a little more welcoming to their likely future colleague: Over the past three days, @Ocasio2018 has a 75 percent positive score on Twitter. –Alex Shultz Image: Twitter / @Ocasion2018
