I feel like during Black History Month, we spend a lot of time talking about Black people who have done amazing things, overcome unimaginable feats, accomplished seemingly impossible goals-and while I think it’s so important to celebrate them, to acknowledge their work, their struggle, their legacy, it’s also important to celebrate Black people being. Black people being happy. Black people being at home. Black people being themselves. I want my kids to know that their worth is not attached to what they accomplish, and that being Black is something to celebrate, even when we aren’t performing or doing something otherworldly or heroic. So, this Black History month, I’m celebrating Sojourner and her truth. Martin and his dream. Rosa and her defiance. I’m also celebrating Theo riding his bike. Uriah eating three sandwiches at the picnic. Anaya coloring all over her shirt. Uzi learning a new word. My wife and I watching our children play in the yard. I’m celebrating us together, just being, beautifully in our Blackness.
