Imagine a situation where we grapple with language’s limitations in defining what a good man is. Language is our tool for expressing complex thoughts and ideas and conveying emotions and experiences. It is the medium through which we exchange knowledge, nurture relationships, and promote understanding. But what happens when our thoughts’ complexity exceeds our words’ capacity?
When we strive to find a word for individuals who exceed altruism—those who aspire to impact the world positively, we come to a stark realization. Our current vocabulary, with terms like “altruist”, “benefactor”, “humanitarian”, and ”philanthropist”, is inadequate. It fails to fully capture the essence of the mindset we are attempting to define, highlighting the urgent need for a more comprehensive term.
This realization underscores the critical necessity for a new term that can truly embody the depth of this mindset. To bridge this linguistic gap, I propose a new term: Cosmobenefactor. This term, derived from “kosmos” the Greek word for the universe or world order, “benefit”, from the Latin’ beneficiary (meaning to do good), and the suffix “tor” indicating action, defines an individual actively engaged in advancing the well-being of society at large, with a focus on welfare over personal interests. The introduction of this new term is pivotal in our mission to redefine a mindset that goes beyond altruism and has implications for modern masculinity.
In this context, a Cosmobenefactor is described as a “creator” or “eternal benefactor” who aims to leave a lasting influence that extends beyond their lifetime, bringing enduring value to humanity. These individuals are not only motivated by the desire to lead a life for the greater good in the present but also by a drive to create something significant that continues to inspire and benefit future generations.
While fundamental, good character and behavior often revolve around personal morality and social conformity. These attributes typically involve adherence to societal norms and ethical guidelines and maintaining a respectable public image. However, being a Cosmobenefactor sometimes demands surpassing these boundaries by critically evaluating and, at times, challenging societal norms that may not align with universal well-being. It necessitates a willingness to advocate for systemic change when existing structures perpetuate harm or inequality. For instance, a Cosmobenefactor might champion policy changes that address social inequality. Irrespective of how morally upright one appears within those structures, a Cosmobenefactor must prioritize actions that benefit others, even if it means swimming against the tide of accepted good behavior.
Furthermore, self-improvement and personal development focus on individual goals, skills, and achievements, often aimed at enhancing one’s life and prospects. While self-improvement can lead to greater efficacy and influence, a Cosmobenefactor must channel these enhanced capabilities toward philanthropic endeavors. This means using personal growth and development to make tangible contributions to solving societal challenges. A Cosmobenefactor is not content with self-betterment for its own sake but instead seeks to leverage personal development to facilitate positive change. The emphasis is on how self-improvement translates into meaningful action that makes a positive dent in the universe.
The essence of being a Cosmobenefactor lies in cultivating a worldview that embraces interconnectedness and interdependence. This perspective goes beyond personal virtue to include an awareness of the complex web of life and the impact of one’s actions within it. A Cosmobenefactor recognizes that every decision has far-reaching consequences and is committed to making choices that honor the interconnectedness of all living beings. Therefore, good character, behavior, and self-improvement are necessary but insufficient components of a good man’s identity.
The good man and his intentions
Self-actualization focuses on realizing personal potential, often an outcome or goal. However, the actions of a Cosmobenefactor ensure that a man lives with the intention of making positive contributions to society. Living with this intention creates a better man, whether or not there are actual or lasting contributions. By nurturing intentions, good men realize they control their intentions, not always the outcomes.
Living with the intention of acting as a Cosmobenefactor can profoundly enhance personal growth and development. By focusing on the well-being of the broader world, Cosmobenefactors cultivate a mindset that transcends personal and immediate concerns. This perspective fosters a deep sense of empathy and compassion as individuals strive to understand and address the needs of diverse communities and ecosystems. Engaging with the world through this lens encourages a sense of purpose that extends beyond self-interest and inspires a more interconnected and harmonious existence. This outward focus often results in increased self-awareness as individuals learn to balance their needs with those of the larger world, leading to a more fulfilling and enriched life.
Meaning and the good man
Being a Cosmosbenefactor aligns with pursuing meaning by fostering a sense of transcendence. Many find that helping others and making a positive impact provides a deeper sense of meaning than focusing solely on personal goals. This sense of fulfillment is a powerful motivator, inspiring individuals to continue their journey as Cosmosbenefactors.
In closing
While self-improvement, self-development, and self-actualization can be pursued for intrinsic reasons, incorporating a Cosmobenefactor perspective adds depth and meaning to these endeavors. By aligning personal growth with broader societal goals, individuals can achieve a more comprehensive and impactful form of development that benefits themselves and the world around them. This balanced approach enhances both personal fulfillment and contributes to the greater good. It answers the question of self-improvement for what??? It broadens the scope to include the well-being of others and the world. By balancing personal growth with contributions to the greater good, individuals can achieve a more comprehensive and meaningful form of goodness that resonates on both personal and societal levels.
Please consider your life priorities and contemplate how they resonate with the essence of being a Cosmosbenefactor man. Let’s continue the conversation and define a good man who cherishes contributions above the transient chase for self-centered pursuits. May this discourse ignite a spark within you to embark on this journey and embrace the influence you can wield as a good Cosmosbenefactor man.
Given the personal and communal advantages associated with adopting the mindset of a Cosmobenefactor, what is keeping men from embracing this perspective? Subsequent articles will explore this query and explain why some obstacles are unconscious and insidious.
