Macron worked closely with Trump as part of the strikes in Syria earlier this month, and he hopes to persuade Trump to keep a military presence in the war-torn country. Macron has another reason to buddy up with the volatile U.S. president: Trump is widely expected to drop out of the Iran deal on May 12, something France and other European nations desperately do not want to happen. Macron’s friendship bid appears to be working to some extent, at least compared with the relationship between POTUS and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. As CNN reports, “Trump has viewed Merkel as irrevocably tied to Obama,” making his warm feelings toward Macron a bit ironic considering Macron was publicly endorsed by the former U.S. president. Over the last 90 days, it’s Merkel who has the highest approval ratings among English-speaking Social with a 49 percent positive score. Macron is a step below at 44 percent positive, followed by Trump all the way at 34 percent. Somehow, that’s higher than UK Prime Minster Theresa May, however. She has a 33 percent score. –Alex Shultz
