The First Page
As I sit at my desk and look across my office to the ever-growing stack of comic books on my reading table, I’m reminded about just how much good stuff is out there these days for us to read.
Maybe I’m older (not old) and I know that I look at comics differently than I did when I was a kid, but there is so much more out there in the way of content that the choices are truly limitless.
Want to find a female superhero that has the curves of a woman living in the real world and not looking like a typical female comic book character? Marvel has you covered with The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Of course, you have to take a proportionately sized squirrel tail on her boo-tay, but that’s no big deal, right?
Like magic, both light and dark DC has you covered with their Vertigo collection and Sandman series along with Justice League Dark—a group of crime fighters, led by Wonder Woman, world-class magician, Zatanna Zatara, and master magic both light and dark, John Constantine.
As has been mentioned many times here, the independent companies have everything under the sun from My Little Pony and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Archie & the gang, and characters you’ve never heard of, but should.
The point is that this is a great time to be reading comic books because, as I said, there is so much great stuff out there that it’s an adventure just visiting your local shop to see what they have in stock.
Let me know what you find!

The Back Cover
You may notice that this column is a bit shorter than usual this week and that’s because of the sheer volume of previews and comic books I have to get through. Fear not loyal reader, as there will be a special issue coming out this week with a review and preview in it. Stay tuned….
As I look out the window in my office I see that it’s starting to snow and also that my sixty-pound black lab service dog is hopping around out there as he tries to catch snowflakes on his tongue. Or whatever it is that dogs do when hopping around in the snow. If it keeps snowing it will be a great time to grab a mug of something warm and sit in my mostly-comfy chair and get caught up on some reading.
If you’re dealing with the major snowfall that’s supposed to blanket a lot of the country this weekend, I suggest staying in and reading some comic books. If you’re in an area where the weather is better, then get out to your comic shop and start browsing for something new and cool!
