In the months of a pandemic, we have seen relationships change. Sometimes, it’s for the bad. For example, marriages may end up in divorce as more couples are together and stress builds up. However, it is not all negative. In fact, there are many couples who are only closer, especially when it comes to engagement. Let’s look at some reasons why.
In An Age of Fear, Some People Stopped Fearing
It’s a time for many people to be in fear and uncertainty, and for a good reason. However, not all people feel the same about popping the question. As you probably know, proposing to someone is something that gathers courage. Sure, the worst thing that could happen is they say no, but you feel embarrassed and uncertain about the relationship’s future. With that said, this is an age where we don’t know what the future will bring. Because of this, many people feel like they have nothing left to lose and they end up popping the question much easier.
Creative Proposals
For many couples, proposing the question is an art. They want to do it in a place that is memorable and propose in a creative manner. However, what one can do in a pandemic is more limiting. You can’t propose at a concert or travel to another country to pop the question.
Some couples pop the question through a Zoom call or ask it in a more modest location. However, there are some couples who are a little more creative. Some may try to propose through an online game. Others may pop the question in a socially distanced area of the park.
Not Spending As Much
Some may not be spending money on a ring due to tough times, instead opting for a more sentimental present. For some millennials and older members of Gen Z, buying rings is already something they were skeptical of. However, when losing your job is the norm, many are taking to spending money on something a little less expensive.
Here are some examples of what people are purchasing instead of an engagement ring:
- Cheaper rings. From fake gold to a novelty ring, some people may find that to be more sentimental.
- A gift that the other may appreciate. It can be something like a new video game, or even a handmade craft. For many people, they are abandoning a ring for something a little more personal. It may not cost as much, but it can offer more value.
- Their words alone. For some couples, they may find that they don’t need to spend money to have a good proposal ready.
Being Engaged is a Good Excuse to Be Together
Some people may be popping the question because they want to live together. In a time of a pandemic, many people who are dating are having to move to Zoom calls and social distancing when they do see each other. However, if the two of you are about to be married, then this may help make the case as to why the two of you should be together.
With that said, it’s still important that you move in together. Always make sure you are able to afford to do so beforehand. If you aren’t moved in together and are still having to see each other, that will defeat the purpose.
Seek Help
These are troubling times, and even if the two of you are happy you popped the question, there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done in order to have a successful relationship. For example, you may want to look to premarital counseling, which can give you advice and ways to manage conflict when you are married. This form of counseling can teach you things many would have wished they knew before marriage. From how to manage money to looking for threats to your marriage, premarital counseling can help you figure out various aspects of marriage.
Besides that, there are several other reasons why you may want to see a counselor before you two get hitched. You may have personal problems that you want to deal with. These can show their head during the pandemic. If you are dealing with anxiety or depression, you may want to treat that before committing to someone. While your partner is there to help you, they are also not your therapist.
If you want to avoid arguing and avoid possible conflict during the pandemic, talking to a counselor can be important as well. It’s much easier to find a counselor online who will work with you and allow you to be the best partner possible, with the same towards your partner.
