My father used to tell me, “Don’t bite off more than you can chew”. If we put too much food on the plate, he’d say something like, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.” Then there was this one: “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” Moderation was a cornerstone of the family ethic.
Jon Snow hears that and snickers. Moderation shmoderation. Pretty sure I hear him mutter that under his breath.
Clearly, Jon Snow grew up in a different family. The bigger the stick, the more he wants to run with it. Today he ran off the trail and came back dragging a fallen tree limb. Not a stick. An entire tree limb. When I see something that looks like its “too much” for me, I hear my father’s voice. This pup hears something different. When he sees a giant stick, he hears “more fun”. More fun = life goals. He’s not worried about being graceful. He’s not bothering himself about the chance of failing or falling short. He doesn’t care about “can’t” or “shouldn’t”. Fun is the end game. Period. A giant stick that he can barely carry is the most fun, so for him, the more there is, the better. Look at how happy he is.
I should try that.
