Our relationship with money can wreak havoc on our lives. We can feel insecure, anxious and unclear about our finances, both when we gain and lose it. Today’s guest shows us how to release the shame we carry about money.
Money is a tool. On its own you could say it is neutral, but for most of us it rarely feels that way. Our emotions can range from ecstatic to fearful, when we gain and lose money. Our ideas about money can wreak havoc on our lives; ideas about how much we are supposed to have and by when. We can compare ourselves to others, feeling like they’ve “made it” with money and we have not. We don’t often live up to the ideals and images the media portrays.
Last year I started to see how much anxiety about money has robbed me of pleasure. It has been a painful and powerful realization, setting me on a path of freeing myself. In today’s Man Alive Podcast with my colleague and friend, Adam Koren, we talked about releasing money shame. As a Money Coach, Adam has worked with hundreds of people to achieve their money goals. Most of the work is not strategy, but navigating the emotions and ideas about money.
In our conversation we discussed:
- What happens when men get stuck in money shame
- How expectations impact your relationship with money
- The “should”s we hold around money for retirement, saving, investing
- Making peace with money
- Beyond the numbers, what is needed to heal money wounds
