Now, another unfairly shunned food could make its comeback thanks to new research. Pasta has long been thought of as a gut extender and insulin spiker since it is made from refined grains. However, a new study published by the medical journal BMJ Open found that pasta is low on the glycemic index, meaning that blood sugar levels don’t rise too quickly after eating it. Senior study author John Sievenpiper told Reuters that pasta gets caught up in anti-carbohydrate sentiment, but it really has no effect on weight gain when part of a healthy diet. That’s good news for Social, whose love of pasta shows up in sentiment scores – positives in the mid-70s for fettuccine and linguine, for example, though the numbers drop to 60 percent for spaghetti. But nutritionists warn that if you’re watching your weight, watch what you slather on your pasta. Nobody is going to drop many lbs. twirling their noodles in Alfredo sauce. –Hugo Guzman
