“All I’ve ever wanted is a son who joins Earth Club!”
With championship season in full swing, many of us will be glued to the tube, on the edge of our seats, jeering our rivals and cheering for our teams. Let’s not forget we’re all on the same rock floating around in space, one great big team playing for the championship of humanity. As an outdoorsman, I get excited about being in the environment, and have no problem booing the players who commit personal fouls against the ecosystem that supports the score of harvests from the wild.
You can celebrate by going for a half court shot at the buzzer, tossing your recycling into the bin from the other side of the kitchen, “He shoots he scores!” Treat your surrounding environment like a trophy case. “Yep, planted that split-leaf maple after they won the national championship in 2010. It was a rough start, but after a rebuilding year or two, look how much it’s grown.” Most of all, don’t forget teamwork. Join a watershed cleanup crew. Study the playbooks of champion composters. Make good calls about your purchases. Play defense against political agendas that put our team at risk of losing. Do whatever you can for your teammates and coaches on planet earth. Enjoy the small victories and learn from your defeats, play until the last whistle blows…
