Let’s play a little word association. I’m going to write a phrase and I want you to say the first thing that comes to your mind. Which, admittedly, I know, isn’t easy to do in this forum. Roll with me, here.
Ready for your phrase? Here goes…
Alpha Male.
Now, on a visceral level, that phrase makes me want to scream in several different foreign languages. Foreign languages that I don’t even understand or speak. I mean, that phrase makes me want to scream in Latin!
Latin is a dead language, y’all!
Who do you think of when you think of an alpha male?
An alpha male lives his life for his purpose. He lives his life from the highest vision of himself. He’s not flashy and “look at me.” People follow him because he’s being all these things and more from an authentic, real place.

To me, an alpha male is someone who commands a room with his presence. He is a natural leader who people respect. His voice commands attention (and I’m not talking about speaking voice either.) And he looks out for his tribe.
Granted, I could be talking about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Although his voice commands the millions (and millions) of “The Rock’s” fans, this isn’t what I’m talking about.
When I think alpha male, I think of my grandfather. I think of the man, without whom, I wouldn’t be a writer today.
Melborn Ivey was awarded the purple heart after he was wounded during the Battle of Guadalcanal. He went on to become highly successful in agriculture and real estate despite only having a 5th grade education.
While he didn’t have the most commanding presence, he was universally respected and loved.
And he was his own man.
Here was a wealthy white man in the Jim Crow Deep South whose best friend was an uneducated black man. And you know he got a load of grief for that, but he didn’t care. Hosea was his brother and he loved him as such.
An alpha male isn’t perfect. Look to my Grandfather’s taste in women after my Grandmother passed away. To call it questionable would be generous.
I’ll leave the judgment to your imagination, dear reader…
When I think of a real alpha male, here are a few characteristics I believe he has:
- He’s authentic. You always know where you stand with an alpha man.
- He is in touch with his emotions. And yes, that means you can cry if you need to cry.
- He is a natural leader. People are drawn to the alpha man and he commands respect.
- He knows who he is. And he owns who he is.
- He takes care of his tribe; his friends, kids, partners, and significant others.
In that above list, I want you to notice something. Do you see anything in there about physical strength? The number of zeroes in your bank account? Your sexual virility or number of conquests?
Being alpha isn’t about what some on the internet may tell you. And by some on the internet, I’m including me in this category.
An alpha male lives his life for his purpose. He lives his life from the highest vision of himself. He’s not flashy and “look at me.” People follow him because he’s being all these things and more from an authentic, real place.
To bottom line it; an alpha male owns his life from a real, authentic place.

By the way, I consider myself an alpha man, but I haven’t always been this way. Leaning into alpha is something that I still fight from time to time, but I’m embracing it.
Embrace alpha: it’ll open up your life in ways you haven’t even dreamed.
