I took a lot of heat, especially over at Jezebel, for declaring my fandom for Lady Gaga because she is both amazingly talented and breaks gender stereotypes. This week, Gaga appeared on the Howard Stern show. To my detractors, I simply present this clip. Honestly, it gives me chills. Maybe I am the only one, with a big problem from the neck up, but I really don’t care.
It reminds me of a Moth story I recently heard, in which rapper Darryl “DMC” McDaniels confessed his Sarah McLachlan obsession. He was suicidal and didn’t know why despite all his fame and glory. On tour he happened to hear McLachlan’s song “Angel” and that became his reason for living. He brought it with him everywhere. One day, he bumped into her at a party and told her how her song saved his life and that she was his God. And she simply told him, “That’s what music is suppose to do.” He went on to write a book and, in the process, found out he was adopted. That was the piece missing. He called McLachlan and asked her to write a song with him about his being-adopted story. They recorded the song together. DMC had filled the void, and on the way out of the studio McLachlan told him something interesting. She was adopted too. DMC didn’t know that.
Enough.
Gaga is my God. Her music does what music is suppose to do. At least for me. Watch the video.
Then just try to talk smack.
interesting, gaga has a better voice unplugged than i imagined.
her voice, the colour of her voice isnt a pop voice but rock, and a hard rock/ hair metal voice at that. her colour has that blues inspired emotionality in it, i heard growing up in the female singer-songwriters of the 70s
she missed her genre – classic rock of the 70s and 80s. her voice would have really suited that period.
She is an incredibly immense talent. I enjoyed her first singles because of their beat and melodies but because of the genre (electronic pop/dance) I overlooked her vocal ability. Listening to music in the era of autotune also makes the listener jaded as well.
But seeing her live performances (her HBO special) and this one really demonstrate what a gift she has, I never hear her off pitch, sharp or flat, etc.
And this is coming from a guy who listens to a lot of country music and classic rock.
I have a hard time taking someone who throws around racial slurs in a song about how “it’s okay to be yourself” seriously, let alone bringing them to divine status. But maybe I was just ~born this way~.
