There are many benefits to modern day technology and one of the best technological inventions is the internet. The strong presence of technology and innovation in the present human society has led to more and more people making use of the internet. Yes, there is no doubt about the appeal of the internet and the high number of people making use of its features. However, as the internet continues to grow into almost every part of our life, one question keeps ringing about whether or not the internet had managed to bring people closer to one another.
Now, when websites, social media platforms and other resources of the internet are created, they are often done to pass information from one group of people to another. This has the intention to bring people together and foster close interpersonal relations. Also, a lot of people would argue that the fact that the internet can be accessed all over the world means that the corners of the world have been brought together and communication is now easier. People from far corners of the world can easily share files, information and other types of content.
Another argument that supports how much the internet brings us together is the exponential growth of social media. There are now so many social media platforms around the world and with each of them providing instant messaging, it means you can reach contacts anywhere at amazing speed. Social Media Platforms have grown and almost everyone uses them now. For instance, Facebook is known to have about 2.4 Billion active users. So, with the right platform and the person’s contacts, you can interact with people you know and don’t know.
Businesses, brands, and organizations also now make use of the internet to reach their customers. They are aware that with the use of creating websites and well-placed ads, they can get their products to the far corners of the world. Every business is now going global and smaller businesses now make use of the internet to compete with the bigger and more established brands.
These are all arguments that support the fact that the internet has indeed brought us together. However, with every good argument, there’s always something to counter it.
Well, certain groups of people have complained now that despite the increase in the popularity of different types of social media, communication may not have improved. These people complain about the activity of people on these social media platforms. Basically, the type of communication established through social media is incomparable to face-to-face contact. This argument isn’t without its basis as the internet has made it easier for people to isolate themselves while they still communicate a lot on social media.
Also, another group of people complains that the internet has increased the number of privacy issues. Now, everything is connected to the internet and it’s difficult to keep your details off the internet. Time and time again, content kept on the internet have been hacked or tampered with, leaving these individuals exposed to fraud and other issues.
There’s a lot of evidence to back up either of the arguments. It even goes further if you choose to investigate more, but it cannot be denied that the internet has helped to unlocked certain possibilities and create certain communication links/channels that were never existent.
