Do we still believe that anyone can cross class lines if they work hard enough?
You’ve read the stats: the top 1% control as much wealth as the bottom 70% combined. You’ve heard it said so often it’s one of are all time favorite clichés: “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.” But now, it seems the rich are getting astronomically richer and the poor are getting a whole lot poorer. Sales at Walmart are down because the average guy in middle-America can’t afford to shop there anymore. The rags-to-riches story remains elusive for almost everyone except a lucky few. Is it possible to get out of the class you were born into just by working hard enough? Socioeconomic class and its implications doesn’t get talked about as much as it should—as Tom Matlack writes, “Why is any real discussion about our own complicated relationship to personal wealth and poverty more difficult to get at than our sexual hang-ups?” So we’re here to start the conversation. The posts here are about the impact of class and wealth and how they affect the men of today.
