Trying to pick up women on the Internet and failing miserably? Well, while you might be alone in your parents’ basement, you’re not alone in the cyber-dating wilderness. Just “liking” a woman’s Facebook picture or changing your status to “looking for a relationship” isn’t going to cut it.
But you’re in luck.
Badoo.com, an Internet dating site, analyzed the success rates of about 200,000 attempted online flirtations in 11 different languages over a one-month period.
The most successful line? Wait for it … You have beautiful lips.
While that is definitely a completely normal thing to say to someone over the Internet, American women preferred “You dress beautifully.” British women like it when you compliment their legs, while the Dutch and Portuguese melt over comments about their ears.
According to Jo Hemmings, a British behavioral psychologist, female cyber-daters really just want something more personal:
What many women want is for men to take the initiative and not be wishy-washy. A lot of men on dating sites send a sort of generic message and women recognize something that hasn’t been customized for them.

The focus on pickup lines treats women like they’re video games to be won if you hit the right buttons at the right time. There’s no one line that makes someone want to have a conversation with you, and there’s no one line that gets someone to have sex with you.
If you want to date someone, the best bet is to become an interesting person, and treat the other person with respect. Pickup lines are pretty much the opposite of that.
Being an interesting person won’t do any good if you can’t get a woman’s attention in the first place, and that’s what those initial e-messages or real life conversational attempts are for.
