Once the domain of applications such as Google Docs and Skype, collaboration software has evolved into its own field, dominated by titans like Slack and Microsoft Teams. Slack, which boasts 5 million daily users as of last July, leads the field. But it’s facing powerful competition from Microsoft, which has packaged Teams into its Microsoft Office Suite. Still, Slack’s third-party apps and mobile version have earned it a serious edge on social media where its 87 percent positives beat Teams’ 67 percent. That said, Slack has a two-year head start on Teams, having launched in 2014, while Teams got up and running in 2016. And Teams might soon see an influx of new users since Microsoft has announced that it will phase out Skype for Business to focus on Teams. If Slack wants to keep its lead, it can’t slack off on delivering new features. –Hugo Guzman
