When you have a goal or a dream you are trying to reach, in what scenario is quitting ever a viable option? When was quitting for you just the easiest thing to do rather than the necessary thing to do? When you believe in something strongly, quitting is NOT an option.
It doesn’t mean we don’t ever quit. In fact, someone does it every day. Writers quit on their novels, actors give up on their careers before they give it a chance, students quit high school or college, entrepreneurs give up their dreams. I could go on and I’m sure you could, too. But how close were any of them to success, to fulfilling their dreams? The thing about quitting is that you won’t know unless you decide to persevere—when you decide that quitting for the sake of quitting, is not an option.
The one thing you’ll know for sure is that when you quit, you will not reach your goals. Proverbs 13:12 puts it this way: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.”
What if you quit? What if you defer your dream indefinitely? Would you be like many millions who reach the end of their days and say, “What if …?” Look around you. On a daily basis, you probably speak with someone who didn’t follow through on their dreams and goals. You don’t want to be an example because you didn’t stick with your dreams, but rather an example because you did.
By now, most of us know the story of Michael Jordan, whose high school coach didn’t pick him for the team when he tried out. However, Michael Jordan didn’t give up on his dream. Instead, he went on to prove the coach wrong and we all know how that story ends.
What if perceived failure tempts you into giving up? Thomas Edison, inventor of the light-bulb and other things, failed frequently. In fact, when one of his friends asked about his failures, his comment was, “Why, man, I have gotten lots of results. I know several thousand things that won’t work!” He also said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
In all of life, throughout time, there are only a tiny percentage who go on to realize success and fulfill their dreams because they refused to give up. Remember, success is different for everyone. Only you can know what it really looks like. But be assured of one fact: Quitters never win.
Know your why. Pivot when there are detours or if data and all information says you should. In other words, fail if it just doesn’t work one way, but always try another in order to reach your goals and fulfill your “why.” Don’t give up wholesale.
Consider the following suggestions to help you to continue to persevere rather than give in and give up:
• Have a strong why … strong enough to overcome …
• We fear success, we fear failure, and we fear trying, because we are_______________
• We can’t get up the gumption to really go for it and we watch others succeed because they are able to:
-set priorities that are related to success and they proceed to engage in them.
-passionately embracing their dreams and their why.
