When you first start seeing or talking to someone, you might find yourself replaying conversations in your head and trying to overanalyze them.
The hard reality is that not everything is worth overanalyzing. There are a number of common phrases guys use early in dating that indicate a lack of interest.
Here’s your cheat code for these 10 things guys say when they’re not interested.
1. “I’m too busy right now.”
What he actually means: He’s too busy for you.
Let’s be real: Life can be really busy for all of us, but we prioritize the people we care about. Everyone makes time for what matters to them. If he’s too busy (with no opportunities to see you in sight), it’s a nice way of saying he’s not actually interested — or he’ll only be interested if he can’t find any other plans.
2. “I’m not looking for anything serious.”
What he actually means: I’m not looking for anything serious with you.
Often, women see this phrase as a challenge. If we can change the guy who says he doesn’t want a serious relationship, we must be really special to him.
But your best bet is to believe him the first time. Otherwise, you’ll end up in a year-long situationship, still hoping you can change his mind. Spoiler alert: You can’t.
3. “I don’t like labels.”
What he actually means: I don’t want to be tied down.
Putting a label on it comes with expectations. Many guys would rather stay in a situationship or friends-with-benefits arrangement than take things to the next level if that allows them to avoid accountability.
4. “You’re overthinking it.”
What he actually means: I don’t want to talk about this.
Sometimes, women do overthink things. But most of the time, your spidey senses are probably on, and the guy is trying to shut down the conversation without conflict. He’s not emotionally available enough to have this conversation.
5. “I didn’t think it was a big deal.”
What he actually means: I didn’t consider your feelings.
Guys often try to use this as an excuse for their bad behavior, but the reality is simple. They didn’t think about how their choices would affect your feelings (or they just didn’t care).
6. “Let’s just see where things go.”
What he actually means: I don’t want to commit.
Whether they’re keeping their options open or not looking to get into a relationship, this phrase guys use in early dating is a huge red flag that they’re not going to commit.
If you’re not on the same page, you’ll be disappointed if you hang around trying to change him.
7. “I’m bad at texting.”
What he actually means: I’m not that emotionally invested.
The reality is that no one is “bad at texting” if they’re interested. If he wanted to, he would. And if he didn’t, take it as a sign to move on.
8. “You deserve better.”
What he actually means: I’m not going to do anything to try to treat you better or make this work.
When a guy makes this statement, you owe it to yourself to listen. He’s telling the truth.
9. “I’m focusing on myself right now.”
What he actually means: I’m not focusing on you.
A guy will try to make himself seem like he’s busy and working on improving himself. The reality is that he’s just not that into you.
10. “Any guy would be lucky to have you.”
What he actually means: I’m not interested, but I think you’re a good person.
He’s trying to put you down nicely. He’s never going to make things official with you, but he cares about your feelings enough to be kind about it.
The Bottom Line
Not everything a guy says needs to be decoded. Sometimes, we need to take what men say at face value.
It’s important to keep in mind that actions matter even more than words do. If someone tells you (or shows you) who they are or what their intentions are, you owe it to yourself to listen.
